I thought I would give folks an update on my experience visiting the migration office to extend my visa this morning, in case anyone is interested.
Context: I've been here since December 2022 and have been a tourist the entire time, doing a mix of border crossings and extensions. The first time I extended it was in March 2023 (after arriving in late 2022), and then I did it again sometime a year or so later, after completing border crossings in the interim. I last entered Argentina in late May, before the new executive decrees took effect.
Experience: The bureaucratic process has been streamlined significantly. I arrived shortly after they opened, and I was the first person to be served—no more crazy lines. I arrived at 8:15 and was talking to an agent by 8:45.
Outcome: I was denied. The agent informed me that, since I already had an extension on my record and hadn't been out of the country consecutively for six months, I was ineligible to extend my tourist visa. I'm not sure if this is due to new rules or if the agent who extended my tourist visa last time was trying to get me out the door, but that was the first time I had heard that. The agent was very helpful and made an appointment for me to speak with the agents who handle digital tourist visas for next week. By that point, the original date of my tourist visa will have expired, but hopefully that won't be an issue since I'm actively working on it. For reference, I originally applied for a digital nomad visa (
which I wrote about here) in 2022 and was denied because the application was lost for three months, and by the time they began processing it, I had already entered the country.
Hopefully, I can get a digital nomad visa for six months to give myself some runway to sort out an alternative immigration path.
I'll keep you all updated.
