I am sure all of you have heard about the riots that occurred last night after Riverplate tied a game that caused them to be bumped to a lower league.

I understand loving a team and I can even say I cry over lost games, but I can never imagine going into a destructive fury over it!

I just read that the injured count was 89. That is so sad! Also, looking at the photos of the damage is really shocking.

Was anyone in the area? I cannot imagine the chaos and the danger for the residents of Nuñez.

Has anyone read any further news on this?

It was not the start of the second world war.

Smart people were away, had there car in a safe place and there place locked

Yes, but those locked doors didn't really help the businesses that had their windows smashed open and their stuff looted. Nor the police that were injured. Pretty sickening to be honest and I hope they prosecute the hooligans in custody.

What about the wanton damage to the stadium and surrounding area! And lighting fires on Av.Libertador, really shameful.

Guess you missed the Vancouver riots a couple of weeks ago over losing the Stanley Cup finals -- lots more damage (+ 2m dollars) in about a 4 hrs timeframe, 15 or more police cars burnt (50k each), private citizens cars destroyed, looting at major department stores -- Sears, London Drugs (pharmacy but with huge electronics department in the basement totally ransacked), and oddly enough a tuxedo store had all of its merchandise stolen (which wouldn't seem like a big deal until you realise it's wedding season there, lots of people had nothing for their party the following weekend).

Thousands of people were in the streets in Vancouver -- and it wasn't the first time, it happened in 94 as well. In fact, the only time Canada has riots is when the WTC or G8 come to town, or when we win, or lose at a sporting event -- ie Vancouver would have happened even if we had taken home the cup.

Vancouver was a lot worse than River -- you can see photos here -- much worse: http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/06/16/photos-riots-fire-destruction-after-vancouvers-loss/

April 29th, 1992
There was a riot on the streets
Tell me where were you?
You were sittin' home watchin' your TV
While I was paticipating in some anarchy
First spot we hit it was my liqour store
I finally got all that alcohol I can't afford
With red lights flashin', time to retire
And then we turned that liquor store into a structure fire
Next stop we hit, it was the music shop,
It only took one brick to make that window drop
Finally we got our own P.A.
Where do you think I got this guitar that you're hearing today?

(Homicide, never doin' no time)

When we returned to the pad to unload everything
It dawned on me that I need new home furnishings
So once again we filled the van until it was full
Since that day my livin' room's been much more comfortable
Cause everybody in the hood has had it up to here
It's getting harder and harder and harder each and every year
Some kids went in a store with their mother
I saw her when she came out she was gettin' some Pampers

They said it was for the black man
They said it was for the Mexican
And not for the white man
But if you look at the streets, it wasn't about Rodney King
It's this fucked-up situation and these fucked-up police
It's about comin' up and stayin' on top
And screamin' 187 on a mother fuckin' cop
It's not in the papers it's on the wall
National guard
Smoke from all around

[Units be advised of an attempt 211 to arrest now at 938 Temple, 9-3-8 Temple, many subjects with bats trying to get inside the CB's house...they're trying to kill him]

Let it burn
Wanna let it burn, wanna let it burn
Wanna wanna let it burn (I feel insane)
Riots on the streets of BA
Whoa, riots on the streets of Chicago
On the streets of Long Beach
In San Fransico
Riots on the streets of Kansas City
Tuskaloosa, Alabama
Cleveland, Ohio
Fountain Valley, Paramount, Vista Buelle
Eugene, Oregon
Eureeka, California (Let it burn, let it burn)
Hesperia (Won't you let it burn)
Santa Barbara (Let it burn, let it burn)
Mother fuckin' Nevada
San Diego
Lakewood, Florida
Fuckin' 29 Palms

Ok, rioting isn't good, but I think of River as kind of that perpetual underdog in the national rivalries, and as far as I understand, they just got sent down TO THE MINOR LEAGUES!

This is like the Mets or the Red Sox or Liverpool getting sent down, you'd have riots in the streets!

I read about that. I recognize that that riot was worse but it does not make this one any less ridiculous/sad.
