Hello all,

A friend and I are planning a road trip starting at the beginning of April and heading south towards El Calafate. I know that many of the popular bus trips down Ruta 40 stop at this time of year due to less tourists and poor road conditions. My question is. Have any of you driven this route in April? Can you attest to how easy it would be with an economy sized 2-wheel drive rental car? Any tips or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Patrick

All I can say is if I were you, I would go to Casa de Santa Cruz and Casa del Chubut and ask for guidance. Whatever the time of the year, the road demands very good driving skills. It passes through some very remote locations, many road sections remain unpaved, and winds can get terribly strong (strong enough to sweep you off the road).

I just wanted to let you know it's not Ruta 2 you are aiming at. I know people who did it and they say it's an amazing experience.
