Safety

Only 5 times? I thought it was worse.
Just putting in general, there are citys in brazil that make Buenos Aires look like a kinder garden but as a general i would say between 5-8 times more per capita depending the year. Still there are countrys in central america that make even brazil look like a safe place, so at the end all is relative.

Really? I didnt know Brazil was that unsafe. Been there a couple of times (not big cities, only Santa Catarina) and it looked a very quiet place. Plus, the brazilian way of life is much more happy and cheerfull, big cities has beautiful beaches -which it is supposed to relax people.
I know poverty is big but when I think of Brazil I dont think of violence.

That is weird is very well known that, there is even a simpson episode about it lol :) , anyway brazil is between the 4 most dangerous countrys in Latam, there are 3 that are more dangerous than brazil, they are honduras, mexico and venezuela, colombia is always in the top 5 because of the guerrilla. Brazil is one of the 10 more dangerous countrys in the world.
The most dangerous city in Brazil is Macèio with a 135 murders per 100k hab, that make that the chance of getting killed in that city is 2700% biguer than in Buenos Aires in other words 27 times more dangerous, lot of the most dangerous citys in the world are in brazil.

Here you have a list of the most dangerous citys of the world:

Fortunately this is changing, Brazil has became a power now and sooner or later all that violence will disappear. I hope. I know it will take some time, but at this moment theyre getting people out of poverty, they have been industrialized heavily and growing like every country in the region.

Yes Matias, I also grew up reading "Las venas abiertas de América Latina" and thought that urban violence was a function of inequality and poverty. That people were intrinsically good and it was hunger and despair that drive otherwise honest and hard working people into crime. Lower poverty and inequality and crime and violence will go down too. Or that is what I thought. However, a funny thing happened: Poverty and inequality decreased dramatically in Brazil over the past 15 years, but crime (specially violent crime) went up. Why? Nobody really knows. But the increase seems to indicate that there are other social/cultural factors at play here, and poverty is not the real driver.

@camberiu,
Perhaps everyone in Brazil is getting richer but the rich are getting a lot richer and widening the gap between them and the poor. Perhaps this kind of relative inequality is a reason. Just a guess, its a complicated issue.

Inequality is actually down in Brazil across the board. The biggest drop in inequality happened on the very poor Northeast. Interestingly enough, that is the region that saw the biggest jump in violence over the past 15 years. Maceio, for example, saw one of the biggest drops in inequality in the country. Yet, during the same period, the murder rate jumped 5 fold and Maceio is now the most dangerous city in Brazil. This is so out of whack that no one has a good explanation for this phenomenon.

Inequality in Brazil Decreases with a Dramatic Drop in the Northeast

From the first page or so, I loved the whole "Oh yes Bs As is a safe city except for this petty crime, this con and don't do this as you would do in other cities and always be on your guard"

With that reference Bs As is not a safe city. That should not put you off totally but try not to sugar coat the fact that if you can't walk down a street at night or whenever without the fear something bad could happen to you or with very increased caution then the city is not safe. But as many say, just be careful.

Well i was more afraid walking in the night in Paris than here, anyway there is not such thing as a big metropolis without crime so just be careful pay atention and enjoy, more if you are a turist ;)

Pickpocketing is the big thing especially on the Subte. Earlier this week we got on at Plaza Italia and six young guys started to encircle us and the hands started "groping" and we immediately broke through and moved. I noticed they all we holding coats over their hands as they started to reach towards our pockets. It was 25 degrees(86 degrees). That was a HUGE signal for us to move.
