Anyway i have never recive false money or if i had i never realise as i have been able to use it in any other places without problem :p

Only last year friends of mine got fake pesos (1-2 $50) from the Banco Galacia cash machine on Av de Mayo.
They passed it off at a bar i think.

Must keep up to date.
Fake Evita $100 notes are the raage. Since it 's a brand new bill and a lot of people have yet to see one, crooks are printing fake ones faster than the government. $100 notes now flow so fast that it is a great opportunity, also the government was in such a hurry to rush them out the door that even the good ones are not properly printed and have gross QC issues.

Do you have more than 20 pesos in some moment?
Have you ever used a taxi?

I should have said "most people that get in trouble". I haven't lived in BA for a couple of years and from your post it sounds like it's halfway to being Somalia! Have these incidents you referred to happened recently? I did a Google search "French tour guide killed at Falklands monument" and it turned up nothing but maybe it wasn't covered in English press sources.
I thought he was a French photographer?

I thought he was a French photographer?

Indeed, was a wildlife photographer.

A site with his pictures here:

The last picture he took before getting killed (Plaza San Martin):

Well i was more afraid walking in the night in Paris than here, anyway there is not such thing as a big metropolis without crime so just be careful pay atention and enjoy, more if you are a turist :D

Lamarque, for unknown reasons to me, some members on this board, tend always to compare local safety statics with Paris or Maceio or Laredo? We have a feeling of insecurity HERE little or no help to me is hearing about higher crime rates elsewhere!! If interested we can Google for crime rates in Detroit... :D

Pick pocketing is the least of my concerns, one is more prone to be a victim of a collission riding a colectivo, a taxi ride, or walking on Sta Fe Ave. sidewalks!, or being hit by a piece of falling concrete form an old balcony..!!

Keep up the good work

Otis, I wouldn't go so far as to say Buenos Aires is "safe." (After all, what does it have? Seven million residents or something like that?) But I am a retiree, I live here all the time, and I am totally comfortable. When I'm out I try to be alert. But I agree with everything written above. The advice about not letting anyone help you is excellent. Read it and think it over and imagine yourself in situations where this might happen. It may be in a way that just seems so innocent. Any time there is an incident (someone drops something, people getting in an argument, and yes, bird poop, or someone running into you "accidentally" with an ice cream cone), the first thing to do is gather your possessions! Let even the very incident alert you to the possitility something else could be going on. Then step back and survey the situation. Don't let them touch you. No matter how nice they are.

I live here and I keep falling for things. Last time some guy blocked my access to the bar on the subway and a LOVELY woman set out to defend me. What do you think? She had opened my purse before I realized it, but she didn't get anything. I apologize to those who saw my post before but I think this important because of how innocent it seemed. No matter how sweet they are, don't let them touch you! Or even get very close, if possible, though that can be hard to avoid on the subway!

We should probably have an article posted somewhere on this site for people who are coming to visit so we don't go over all this again and again. But Otis it is okay that you asked. One of the reasons we are here--is to help. I hope you enjoy your vacation. Don't let 'em scare you off!!!! :D I love it here.

I just compare with other places i have been living and that are comparable in size and population, well Bs As is more populate than Paris but still is a good comparison point, i have lived in Dublin but that will not help as dublin is like a big town not comparable to BS AS, i don't like to guide my self for what i read in the news i prefer to see on my own experience and in the people that i know experience. For bad luck the goverment and the newspaper are not trustable in this country....
