San Telmo restaurants and cafes

Don Ernesto has been a favorite of mine for years. It has a fun atmosphere and the food is always decent.

I would also add, that if you feel like something more akin to home, the Gibraltar bar, an english style pub on Peru (895) does very good pub grub, and with some interesting beer too.

Don Ernesto is a nice one but my favorite is Manolo at Cochabamba x Bolivar, maybe because it's not full with tourists but mainly with local people.

Thanks gabor -- I live half a block away from Manolo and I agree -- it's a good safe bet and the service is excellent.

1880- across the street- also extremely old school. my wife says Lezama is better, and she is never wrong, but I like 1880 too.

El Casal de Catalunya- go with a group, order the cocoinillo (roast piglet). its sinful. yep, its expensive. but worth it.

Not in San Telmo- its actually more like Boedo- but up Cochabomba- is Martita.
I like it a lot- there is always a line. mushrooms are good, so is the squid, the pastas are homemade, natch.
Martita cooks, her daughter and husband serve. No tourists.

Ugh whatever you do DO NOT walk into "Del Establo" Defensa 1463 as a last minute resort. We never eat out on Sunday nights, but had guests in town who wanted a parilla sí o sí. I have sadly seen DesNivel's quality creep downward, so I wanted to try a new place even though these visitors had been here in 2004 and remember marvelling at Desnivel. Both my other options (Maipú on San Juan and 1880 further down Defensa) were closed even though they were advertised as being open on Sundays. So without further ado, we walked into this joint which I won't even go into describing. Overall awful and I was embarrassed for having taken them there. Yet again another reason to look for a home with a parilla...

I should post the positive side as well. We made up for the bad experience by going to my favorite café/heladería Nonna Bianca at Estados Unidos 425. Also love their cafe con leche with medialunas in the morning. There is a Freddo that opened up right across the street, and maybe their ice cream is a bit better (and of course pricier), but I prefer to support my neighborhood joints!

Nonna Bianca beats Freddo for me, its the cream quotient that does it!!! La Brigada, while pricey has the best meat in San Telmo (and possibly in BA). Top tip, just go and eat the sausages. Cheap and delicious and lots of variety, including excellent wild boar. Of course they hate it when you do this as no one can charge much for sausages in BA. Apease them by spending the difference on a good bottle, they have an excellent cellar. If La Brigada is full, the place opposite is a good second choice and always has room.

I really like 1880, for the atmosphere as much as the food. On Sunday, sitting at a front table watching the kids play in the park across the street and the families enjoying themselves over a parrilla at nearby tables.


El Casal de Catalunya sounds delicious....gotta try it soon!
