Scotland will be independent of the UK? The decision is up to 4 million Scots will vote the motion in a referendum on September 18, 2014 with Yes or No to independence after 305 years of political union with England. Scottish Nationalist First Minister, Alex Salmond, yesterday presented its "white paper" or prospect of independence in 670 pages.

The struggle initiated by Sir William Wallace 1297...?

What will Scots here Vote Yes?

Free at last??? Just a nightmare according to my Scottish friends. Let's hope common sense prevails...

Mine said the same thing. They aren't worried much though because they said the polls show majority will vote no. But they dread the scenario where the majority might say "yes".

This whole white paper thing is pipe dreams according to a lot of people.

Right now the bookies say no. I think they are giving 8/1 for Yes to independence and 1/5 on for No. Heavily favouring the likely outcome of a No vote. I think the nationalist parties in Scotland hope for a good showing in defeat, close to 40% being a watermark and a boost for future campaigning, the might wing some further powers in the existing devolved parliament on the back of a good showing.

William Wallace basically, lose well, keep the head up and fight the long fight.

good pun ..! what head up, Wallace was beheaded disemboweled and Quatered

Why would the Scots not prefer Independence?

Fear of the unknown. Also, for them, being a part of the UK isn't all bad. They also get a lot of good things from it.

Why would the Scots not prefer Independence?

because the white paper released by the SNP isn't totally convincing. Confusing talk of moving out of the European Union but maintaining a currency (the UK pound) governed by another country with a linked exchange rate (like Ireland until the late 70s) where that other country is inside the EU, but not the the EU currency mechanism.

Also, no clear details on funding the health service, what exactly the plans are to decouple the military and what the magic formula is for the Scottish portion of UK debt obligations.

Confused yet...
