Happens all the time ---- it is usually NOT a mistake --- it's a trampa! Watch out at the kioskos especially. Plus the only time I ever got passed a counterfeit bill (a 5 fortunately) it was from a cab driver --- at night.
Here's another common trick (though against owners): If your waiter does not give you a printed bill, chances are he is ripping off the boss.
