Carrefour is the hyper-supermarket based out of France. Jumbo chain is from Chile. I find they have expanded variety of international products, plus one of the better and cleanest supermarkets in Argentina. Not the cheapest though. Owned by Cencosud which is multinational, though primarily SA and headquartered in Santiago.

For all dried sausage and pancetta I like to ask the butcher if they make their own. There are a few small carniceria around who do this, though often can’t provide all year when the hot season disrupts small scale artisanal technique.

I love Jumbo, there's none near me though, and I don't like online grocery shopping because I want to make my own substitutions, so when we finally take delivery of our 0KM I'm going to be shopping there more often. Like you said, it's the cleanest/widest selection in terms of big chains here, and while it's more expensive, I prefer the experience, they just need to open one up downtown.

Also the plus of the one I mentioned is it has an Easy there too which lets you get a lot of stuff taken care of in one stop if you have a car.

Disco is maybe more widespread than Jumbo and basically the same. Some Coto stores are very nice (you should see the one in Nordelta), my favourite part is seeing the photos of old Buenos Aires they put on the walls of the ramps

Q, there actually is a Jumbo downtown, or at least the south part of Retiro. It's on the south side of Arenales just west (away from the river, toward 9 de Julio) of Esmeralda. Almost across the street from the Cancilleria building where the Socialists love to demonstrate.

But the problem is, it's the smallest Jumbo you ever saw. If that one across the street from the Muslim cultural center is the biggest Jumbo, this is correspondingly tiny. There are several bigger chinos in the neighborhood. You know how that big Jumbo has like 24 cajas? This place has two. Most of what they sell there are high-priced imported items. But, still, it is a Jumbo. Technically.

Oh and if you continue north on Esmeralda past Arenales a couple blocks, and then look to your right down the hill, there is a medium-large Disco down there, and it's open on Sunday nights after everything else in the neighborhood is closed.

There's also a Jumbo on Las Heras, near Aguero. It's a fairly small Jumbo but much better stocked than your average Disco.

Yes Disco (and Vea supermarket) also owned by the same Chile company as Jumbo, Cencosud, who also owns Easy. They have different histories with those others being traditional local markets. One has to imagine there is eventual convergence of at least products.

In regards to the OP, if you look into recipes you first find the good ol Nitrates to make the sausage. Then the carcinogens from smoking the prepared meat, A double whammy. I like all those things anyway. Though mostly just as an added ingredient for the occasional recipe like you asked, vs a frequent picada platter.

I've been by it, but once we have a vehicle I'm just going to go to the big one because like you said, it's tiny, though still nicer than most Dias and Carrefour Expresses.

I would love for a 60-100K sqft store off of 9 de Julio, there's a Carrefour on Belgrano near 9 de Julio and it's kind of a dump/never enough cashiers, and theres a normal Carrefour at Rividavia and 9 de Julio, but it's not very nice either, and both often are low/out of stock of key items, which is maybe a CABA thing, because whenever I'm in a different province everything seems to always be in stock, even at the not so nice stores
