Spanish Citizenship Advice

Along the same lines, you might want to look up what a protectorate is as well. It may be that you are confusing a "colonized province" with a protectorate. Morocco was a protectorate of Spain. Nothing else. They were never afforded the same rights as Spaniards. They were never even considered an integral part of Spain.

There are several test cases re the Spanish Sahara that have created jurisprudence in the Spanish courts.

It will depend on date of birth , nationality of parents at birth and legal status of parents at time of birth.

Remember that the cases of Argentine and other Latin American residents getting Spanish citizenship is related to the Civil war and people having to emigrate from Spain after the war.

The Latin American colonies were and since have been afforded a different status than the protectorate of Morocco. However, you could point me to the cases in the Sahara that you are referring to since I am not aware of them.

Nico,

I understand perfectly what you're saying - this line of reasoning is the very reason I'm asking. I understand the difference between sovereign territory and a protectorate, occupation, whatever.

Someone had insisted rather convincingly that it could be done, that's why I want(ed) to find out definitively. There are a couple of kinks in the case that may affect the situation, including the circumstances of when and why they left - that's why I'm asking for someone possibly more proficient than the consulate staff regarding the subject.

GlasgowJohn - Tetuán.

thanks a lot nico and John!
