The Argentine university system dates back to the early colonial period. The first university founded in present-day Argentina is today the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, created in 1610. The Universidad de Buenos Aires was established in 1821 after Argentina became independent from Spain.

Higher education in Argentina consists of a university system and a non-university system (colleges for teacher, humanities, social work, technical, professional, or artistic training). Both types of institutions can be either public or private.
