We're headed to Uruguay on the Buqueubus and I'm not clear on whether we need to have the license plate number etched on all the windows of the car or not. Supposedly it is a requirement, but we've read online that it's never checked and most people do not do it.

Anyone been through this before?

Yes, it's a requirement

  • Además el vehículo debe tener todos los cristales grabados con el número de dominio.

  • Grabados en los cristales del automóvil la numeración alfanumérica correspondiente a su dominio.

I don't know if they never check it or not, but why take the risk? Furthermore it costs like 100 pesos to do it (plus the time lost, obviously)

Check with Buquebus I heard it can be done at the Port before boarding , ??? how much in advance ?
Also on the road to the bridge in Gauleguaychu some places do the etching , check hours they don't work around the clock. Also in Galeguaychu can be done.

Google "grabado de cristales" o "grabado de cristales Buquebus" "grabado de cristales Gualeguaychu" , Also check in Mercado Libre, many places in Warnes CABA, many go to your place to etch the numbers.
