The Perfect Metaphor

Certainly not exclusively his.

And Argentina has Fútbol para Todos.

I agree with Futbol para todos = demagogia, propaganda, etc..... OK

But, if its not in governments hands, do you think what would happen with futbol? You dont have to. Futbol was exploited by Grupo Clarin, they were a mafia, charging 150 pesos per match, and you werent allowed to watch any images of any match untill Sunday at 22:00 hours. (even the matches that were palyed on friday!!)

So as a consumer, I rather futbol para todos, alive, totally free, than monopolies, mafias, or concretely, a bunch of people making a profit with something it could be free.

The bottom line is for whom do you want the futbol, for private people, concentrated economic power of argentine scenario, important political actor that hinds in their behind the wide and diverse local right, which furthermore make some profit with your money, or a government -which you can and must control with the vote, that meaning, unlike Clarin, changing democratically- who offers the exact same thing for free?

You package up the games and sell them that way so no one company has a monopoly over every game. You can even add conditions that certain packages have to be on public tv and include some of the derbies in that package or whatever.

That way the government don't have to subsidise the football teams, throwing away millions and millions and the teams can also get some money to invest in the future.

Not here, but the teams are subsidised with narcos money, or russians weapons money, or oil, or dirty money in general. Its mindblowing to think that a 20 y/o guy from a poor country with a poor background that can hardly read earn in a single year more than entire generations of the most prestigious and qualified doctors in all their lives! Thats football today.

So, no, governments do not subsidize football, except, perhaps, Barcelona, since its a symbol of Catalunya, a city symbol exported to the world, so maybe they have support from Catalunya Comunidad Autónoma. The rest, pure mafia. Here in Argentina, the financing comes from the sales they do to Mexico, Portugal, Spain, etc, that explains more than 90% of income, the rest is from Futbol Para Todos. In any case, Arg futbol is out of bussiness, even before they expropiated futbol from Clarin, which is a huge mystery: they sold and sold and sold for million of dollars, to Barca, Real Madrid, Inter, etc, etc, etc, every club here sold for more than 100 millions dollars, and what we have? not a single peso. Old and broken stadiums, the necesity to continue selling to pay small salaries, broken clubs, out of business, WE HAVE AN EXTREMELY POOR FUTBOL DESPITE SELLING EVERY YEAR FOR HOUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF EUROS, LIKE FOR 20 YEARS.
This suspiciously changed when futbol went to government hands, not even a sale that surpases 10 million euros since that moment, in 2008. But what about all the money? probably billion dollars. It did not went to clubs, or stadiums, or even players! where did it go?

About making a package and stuff, it sounds great, but still, its always better if you could have it for free!!

PS: I am reading a book that I recommend called "The Fix. Soccer and organised crime" from Declan Hill, a canadian sociologist that says every football match around the globe is or could be fixed. This investigation ended with people in jail, in Germany, in Italy, it was his thesis in Oxford.

Even though the viewer doesn't directly pay for it, does not mean its free...

It isn't free, our taxes are going to pay for all of it when they should be going to other things.

Clubs should be investigated about where the transfer money ends up but aren't most of the clubs basically "owned" by the fans through socios?

Its the socio members who are being robbed, the money should be going to run the club, pay for the coaches/players/facilities etc.

Surely they should be investigating their own clubs? That's a completely different issue though.

Macri is right that Argentine clubs should be trying to hire some Chinese players. They will be able to sell the tv rights to china for more as there will be more interest in the league from China and in theory they will then be able to sell shirts etc.

It should not be subsidised by the government, thats a fucking stupid idea.

The standard of football in China is terrible though.

Celtic signed a player in 2006 who couldn't even handle a game against Clyde!

Maybe sending some youths in both directions could help.

The government has no business subsidizing sports. If soccer can't survive in the marketplace, it deserves to die (though it probably just deserves to die, full stop).
