Time to Move to Rio de Janeiro?

Excellent stuff to know, and forgive me, please, for being a sarky bastard if I say that --

"More politically & economically stable than Argentina" seems like a very low standard of comparison. I love this country, there's nowhere I'd rather be, but...
Look at the inflation history and economic stability of both countries then perhaps comment

My other half and I are considering it for our winter escape. The only thing that puts me off is the safety issue. I’ve been a few times and its definitely a lot rougher round the edges. Any big city in LatAm is compared to BA.
If you stay in safe areas and use common sense when out and about it’s fine. I Don’t drive around the Favellas in my Ferrari for sure

The Argentine economy has not played out. Wait to see if Argentina gets another IMF loan. That will require dropping the CEPO which should increase the value of the USD/

Love Rio, especially Leblon area.......my favourite and only a short flight from BA with better climate and great beach lifestyle. More stable politically and economically and now cheaper
Its a lot dirtier than BA though, more favelas and probably a lot less safe.

Rio presents a particular problem with regard to safety, the favelas and better-off areas are very close together, to the extent that if you take the right turn at the fork in the road, you'll get home, take the other and you might end up dead.

You would probably need to live outside Rio, some place like Barra da Tijuca, to live a more relaxed life.

Or live in Sao Paulo, where there's more distance to the favelas, with large safe areas (avoid the city centre), and you get an amazing multicultural experience (it's not just Liberdade). Plus you can drive down to the beach any weekend you like, or take the "ponte aerea" to Rio. I saw some hate being expressed about Brazilians, but SP is a very organized city, at least in the better off areas.

I lived in Leblon for 5 years and never had an issue or felt threatened. Not to say that there are not risks but they do tend to get exaggerated in the media. Barra de Tijuca is too boring a place for me. Not much to do there and nothing like Leblon or Ipanema is.

Loved Sao Paulo too and could live there quite happily.......plenty culture and things to do........but its big city vibe with no beaches and not like living beachside in Leblon Rio

Yeah, I can't believe some of the prices here. Some things are even more expensive than Canada. A lot of things are still cheaper, though. My next stop is Asuncion. Going there in a couple weeks.
