I second Rich One's advice about a window seat. You won't regret it.

This time of year, weather-related delays are always a possibility between Mendoza and Santiago. Even during the summer there are often delays at the border. I missed a flight from Santiago once because the bus was 8 hours late.

You might get a cheap one-way air fare to SCL, which is only a two-hour bus ride from Valpo. There are also buses from Mendoza direct to Valpo, without going through Santiago.
