Argentina and Colombia on Wednesday announced that travellers from the countries worst-affected by the new coronavirus would be isolated to protect the wider population.

That is NOT what it says. It says that it is an OBLIGATION and you MUST stay home or you are breaking the law. Read this. You can even be fined 100,000 pesos.

I assume they will take your address and relevant information. The police where you live would presumably be informed and would check on you as they do in China. The building administration would know and report you if you leave. Such a law will generate tremendous xenophobia. It would be far simpler to ban all flights from the most affected countries (strangely the UK is not on the list!) or anyone who has been in them. It goes without saying that this draconian law and its consequences have not been thought out. People are going to arrive at Ezeiza and be informed that they have to go into quarantine. People on business will be among them. Will they be allowed to board the next flight home? How can you survive since you have to be ALONE? If you have a spouse do you have to find another place to live? Will you be escorted in an ambulance to your home or some government isolation camp? There are a million unanswered questions. What a reckless decision this was.

Can anyone clarify for me - is this people who have recently arrived - I've been here since January- just curious because I don't want people to get nervous if I have to show my US passport when I use my credit card, etc. Also, I have no food in my place so have to go out tonight to shop if I'm in that group (from my sources, I'm not) thank you

Presumably this starts the moment the law is in effect (tomorrow?) so I would imagine you wouldn't have to isolate yourself however you are very likely going to experience discrimination as the government by this reckless action is sending out a signal that foreigners are an evil. As I said, simply BANNING all flights from the affected countries and people who have been in them would be easier. Now there will be chaos at Ezeiza with many people returning who had no idea at all of this outrageous law.

Tourism is out of the question now and business travel just got one in the back of its head...

The UK is part of Europe and the law states all European countries so yes the UK is on the list.

Let's see how this plays out tomorrow with the first wave of tourists arriving to Buenos Aires. It sounds like it will be chaotic if they implement it as this says they will. The right hand never knows what the left hand is doing so I can't imagine this will go over too well. Lots of people have no clue about this. I wonder if they will have the option to immediately leave Argentina and opt not to enter? How will that work?
