Whilst I agree the currency rip off is a world wide phenomenom, the old, "this is the way it is" live with it, mentality reaks of complicity and complacence. If I thought my views of the world on ethics, values and living as a better human being had no value in Argentina I wouldn´t get out of bed in the morning. We expats can all positively influence this country whilst still accepting its cultural delights.

I quite agree.

But don't expect - as many expats seem to do - that another country or people are going to make any (major) adjustments to suit yours or my world views.

Bradly brought up a great point for anyone moving here from the US. Before moving here, I did my research on banking and got the Schwab card he mentioned and also got a CapitalOne credit card. For Schwab, no currency exchange fees, no ATM fees. For CapitalOne, no international charges either.

i would imagine that if someone was coming from AU, NZ, or any country in Europe, you'd be able to find something similar. These days, if you're a traveler or planning a move overseas, it's a quick amount of research that pays off huge in the longrun.

if you're American and don't have one, note that you can apply online. Will just need a mailing address in the US. And if you are here now, you'll need someone in the US to mail your card to you. Might need to still physically mail in the application in some cases, but there is a work around. You can just save the application as a PDF, add a digital signature, email it to someone in the US to place in the mail...of you can always just send it from here.

Sorry, no info on other countries with favorable credit cards.

I accidentally left my card in the ATM last time I was at the airport and had more than $400 taken out - not THAT'S criminal. Like citygrl said, most airports have horrible conversion rates!
