I had similar luck with my iPod touch while I was in BsAs. As it was explained to me the apple stores there are 'authorized' but are not actually owned by Apple-- a franchise of sorts. Being so, they can 'repair' if your item is under Apple warranty (not a 3rd party) -but they won't touch it otherwise. Also note that those same Apple warranties often cover straight replacements at true Apple stores.
So when my audio jack went out my choices were to take it to an unauthorized repair shop, wait until I returned to the USA, or accept that I now had a $400 USD drink coaster.
... In the end I waited and it took me all of 10 minutes in a Best Buy store to have a brand new one in my hands. Annoying.
