Hi everyone!

I’ve been in BA for a couple of months and I’m desperately looking for a place to buy some canned beans in tomato sauce (like Heinz). Do any of the Brits on here know where I could buy this? Please let me know :)

Ha! You are not the first to ask that question! Use the search function and ask for Baked Beans and you will turn up loads of results..

...including this one

If you didn't know already, the article explains that Heinz use different recipes in the US and UK so unless you really want the American style of baked beans, don't even think of importing a case of them via Amazon.

Canned Beans are available at supermarkets in several varieties, small and large
Add tomato paste and bacon plus chorizo colorado, cook, add spices etc.

Today for lunch had beans ( a 150g can for 900 pesos), added salsa picante, olive oil, Provenzal spice (Garlic and Celery), plus parmisano grated cheese. Microwave less than a minute. A gourmet dish for less than a dollar. Preparation time 15 min. Enjoy.

Funny story about beans. I realized the first year in Neuquen that beans were some sort of mysterious ingredient here that only appeared seasonally for Locro, then quietly vanished from shelves. In both the poor and rich circles I have interacted with people show a strange curiosity about what application beans could have in cooking. You'll notice it's virtually non-existent in everyday cuisine down here. So the second year I wised up and when the beans finally hit the shelves again I bought half a pallet worth of different canned beans so I would be good for the next year. Anyway, have fun hunting for them. My kids love them and I regularly cycle between red, white and black beans at the dinner table.

Beans are available in abundance in every Argentina supermarket, small market and many kioskos. Dietéticas might have more variety.
Put 250g of dry beans into a pot of water the night before, and then simmmer only in some new water (no salt) the next day for 1.5-2hrs. Then follow the posted recipe that @elhombresinnombre included above from the Guardian. As that mentioned, canned beans will be too mushy by the time the UK hienz-like recipe of beans and tomato is finished.

Impossible for almost everyone...with the exception of those who prepare...sometimes years in advance...for the inevitable.
I occasionally bring Heinz beans from the Uk or Dubai if I’ve been there but tins tends to be quite heavy and take up more than their fair share of baggage allowance.
My wife and daughter both love Heinz beans despite being Argentine.

What you can get quickly, easily, ready-made and of decent quality in a supermarket in the UK, in Argentina needs to be done manually, from scratch, buying each ingredient from a different place, and the hours of work that implies. I understand that to cook beans you need to leave them in water over night, too, so it'll easiy take you two days to make baked beans - its two minutes to buy in the UK 😅. Home cooking is very nice, idyllic and "wholesome", if you have the time/patience for it.
