I'm looking for activated charcoal / carbon to refill my Brita water filters. At U$9 each they get really expensive. I found a way to simply replace the carbon inside. Much cheaper.

If anyone knows of good household uses for "used" activated carbon please let me know. We are always looking for ways to save money and be more environmentally friendly.

I just typed in "carbon activado" in the search engine on Mercado Libre and got a bunch of results. I know some of the naturists use it for teeth whitening, however I don't know if once it's used it's still good for that purpose.

You can buy activate charcoal from pharmacies in tablets.

It doesn't really seem like that would be the cheapest option though

Thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately, tablets won't work. I need it in granular form. Not a big fan of Mercado Libre. My first two experiences were back-to-back bad. Would prefer buying it from a retail shop.

pet stores? Its used in the filters for fish tanks.
I think it can actually be reused after cooking it, been a while so I don't actually recall.

Good idea about pet stores. Thank you. I brought the Brita with me from the US.

By the way, I use a countertop but attached water purifier that is smaller than a pitcher. You switch a diverter to use it for drinking water and it uses filters that last a month. Producto Argentino. Brand name is PSA. 0810-2222-772. Probably have a website as well.

How do you replace the carbon without destroying the plastic thing around it?
