Cats do the job, after they've finished playing with them that is.
Recently our neighbours had a swimming pool dug out in their garden and the next day we were invaded by cockroaches.
It was bloody awful, not dozens but hundreds.
The cat was on overtime and we were armed to the teeth with cans of Raid.

I feel your pain. I have never seen a single cockroach in Argentina but during my travels in Indonesia I have enjoyed multiple occassions that are awfully similar to the one you are describing there. However, I felt that I could finally prove my manhood in the struggle.

Edit: Well, I have seen a couple of them actually, but very small ones. Not their tough tropical brothers.
