I am looking to buy a 42" +/- led/lcd TV, nothing special, not smart (dumb?), just a regular TV. There are many brands (Hatachi, Panasonic, Sanyo, Sony, Phillips, Philco, Ken Brown) that are right around $5,000AR and a couple (Samsung, LG) that are a little more.

Any opinions out there about which brand gives the best performance and reliability. Which would you (or did you) buy?

Thanks for the help. T/

I went through the same tv selection process a few months ago and finally, 6 weeks ago, I bought a 42" Panasonic Viera TH-L32E5A TH-L42E5A for $5999. I am quite happy with it.
You can see my review at
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIERA-TC-L42E50-42-Inch-LED-LCD/dp/B00752R9PK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364478728&sr=8-1&keywords=panasonic+viera
After reading all the reviews I picked this one because it seemed to rank hi on picture quality, ease of installation, well designed menus and remote controls and not requiring servicing for problems after installation.
And thats been my experience with it. It setup easily (I only got stumped about 4 times, thats well below my average), connected itself to the internet, and has great quality images.
It has alot of features I dont use but I figured 'maybe someday'.
For example it connects to the internet but only to Netflix and a few other sites. I think only Samsung had a real browser but there were lots of complaints from owners about problems with it crashing.
I easily connected my MacBook to this tv and now can nicely display the full internet, downloaded movies, family photos, etc.
The sound quality isnt great but it connected right away to our stereo system.
There are many other features that we dont need to use, ie: It has the ability to have 100+hz (lines per image). This would make images extremely clear and detailed but in our area Direct TV only offers 60hz. Still I'm really happy with the HD picture and when they offer 80hz or 125hz I'm ready. The non-hd pictures are a little fuzzy but I'm still fiddling with the controls.
The colors are amazing.

Good luck.
PM me if I can be of further help.

I would recommend the Samsung UN40EH6030 Non side lit LED "40 ... why?
  • - true 120mhz refresh.
  • - excellent blacks & overall contrast levels.
  • - Good enough 3D option.
Best bang for your $$$.

I would avoid going the 'Smart TV' route as you end up paying extra for smart features (mostly software features) at the cost of a slower refresh rate & lower contrasts.

To me so called 'Smart TVs' are more like a cheap gimmicky computer tacked onto a large monitor..I'd rather use a laptop as the 'smart' part & get the best bang for my bucks on on the monitor hardware side...a faster, solid LED monitor in three years time is going to be more valuable than a slow & superseded Smart TV running on old outdated software features. My laptop can run all the latest Smart TV features in the future. I prefer having more 'upgrading' control over my devices .

EDIT: You can pick one up in mercadolibre.com.ar for around AR$6000.

I'd also look into having a wee holiday in Chile or the states as even after paying all the import duties and flights etc it can still work out quite a cheaper than buying an inferior model in the argy stores.

Does Bs As has the HD format telecast.? I have accustomed myself with the HD programming here in CA that if not bradcasted in HD format, won't even bother to watch. Once you get used to the crystal clear 1080 p resoultion everything else is obsolete... Especially now days with my _Old Eye_ deteriotating.!

what kind of problem or drama to face if entering Ezeiza with a new TV in the box. Any idea?

You'd join the huge queue of Argentines bringing in tv's and pay customs the 50% of the cost over $500? (not 100% sure of this but you can look it up)

I think all the cable companies have an hd option and you can get ISDB-Tb Digital terrestrial tv which carries a few local channels in hd.
