Why Argentina over other countries?

At the risk of changing the subject (the thread is already off topic), I have heard this and if I live long enough, have got this series on my must watch list. How would you rate it against the Sopranos, which to me so far is the best US series I've ever watched?

Pardon me for interjecting, but I would say it is better in some ways. While the Sopranos is very much centered on the characters, the Wire puts the real-life social context of the characters at the forefront. You get a look at the problems of multi-generational poverty, political corruption, union corruption, gang culture, white blue collar families, etc. It's also amusing to see Petyr Baelish as the mayor of Baltimore in the last season.
