Why Southern Italians went to the US and Northernors to Argentina and Brasil

Thank you for Article

Rich you knew I would respond ,so here it goes first round. My life as a Sicilan (tiny bit)

Oh Thank God for Sinatra he helped to open the doors for all Italians Northern or Southern.

Truth if you have ever gone to Sicily not all are short and dark. They are Tall blondes red heads very mixed.

Truth Sicily was visited by the Vikings and Arabs. You can see Africa on a clear day from Sicilty.

I am 6 ft fair skin Red Headed with 100% Sicilain Blood

My mom and her brother had skin white as snow blue eyes dark hair.

My Father and his 7 brothers fair skined light color hair

Sicilans are hard working people. Tradesman and women..

Northern Italians by nature dislike Southern Italians. Sound Familiar.

Why Northern Itlians hate Sicialins so much. Can you figure it out without me saying,

Funny Story. I spent a good amount of time in Milan for my business wanting to relocate there. So I would travel, and de cided it was time to see where my roots were from. I wentr by Train it was about 12 or more hour triip. When we arrived to the end of mainland I was sleeping and then woke up to see peole walking all around and the trian apart. They would take the train apart car by car! Then put it back together in Sicily.
So I went topside to get something to eat, ferry was much like Staten Island Ferry. I went out side and there was Sicily I was amazed it was so close from where I was standing maybe less than Verazzano bridge from SI to Brooklyn (yes there is a nickanme for that bridge, I wont say it, but when i was growing up what we were all called.) So I asked the young guy "why dont they build a bridge its so close" With a smile on his face he said "The Mafia owns the ferry boats" and there you have wehy Northern Italians hate Sicialians. That Family owns Italy. For better or Worse.

My Last name is from a famous family in Sicily and it dd open doors for me to see people in adverftising agencies (same here when I go to hospita and they call my name and people see me! ) But when I saw them and intorfuced myself i woud get hummmmmm bbbbbbbb Mafiosa or your name is very family here do you know it? Yes I know stories....(we would laugh )

End of story

In my wanders here I have found mostly Southern Itaians and most being of Sicialn descent like the man said the nmes are different. Maybe because many jews migrated to Sicily 500 years agao or so my mothers family was one and converted. I
never knew that. She had one of those last names and one day I googled it and it was on there.

Well I know for a fact it must be Northern Italains cooking in Resturnates becasue the pasta is errrrrrr Lasagna made with pancakes!??????

You gotta make from scratch. Maybe try at Maria Fedele.

I found a few Italian markets. Because of my condition and not being mobile I havent been able to visit them. Im sure they have it there you can call.

For your sauce as we Sicilians call it try adding some salt and sugar, you should also put in a little olive oil and basil and cook for hour or so, low heat keep adding water without thining it out.
With meat slow cook for a few hours.

https://italmarket.com.ar/producto/lasagna-semola/ (Not sure if its cut in squares or strips)

https://littleitaliamarket.com.ar/producto/fior_latte_mozzarella__tubo_mozzari_24kg/. this could be better choice

Here we go they carry Barilla your search is over and so is mine, they both carry Pesto and i love Pesto.

They carry Sauce and maybe good Ricotta and Mozzarella!

Yep now were talking if it from Italy what a treat, what you can make is endless!

If you get there let me know. I wont until my condition improves a bit more.

Thanks for starting the Post

Talking about Southern Italians, not making it to Argentina, and the Mafia, isn't Macri descended from a Calabrian family (as well as being descended from the boats, of course)?

We could have done with some decent pizza, though.

On a different note, though still related to how immigrants went to different places, I believe Paul Theroux wrote that while the Irish in the US traditionally moved into the police force, directing traffic, in Argentina, the Italian immigrant population was famously associated with directing traffic, while the Irish went into farming.

As far as I can tell from the surnames I see here in Buenos Aires it appears to me that there were two waves of immigrants from Italy: the first in late 1800 early 20th century mostly from Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy (where I am from) and Veneto, and a second one after the second World War mostly from the southern Italian regions. I can surmise it from two things: 1) when I see that the name of companies, streets (e.g. Repeto) and on some of the chapels in the Recoleta Cemetery are mostly typical of the North, while 2) when I talk with the porteños with Italian parents, abuelos or bisabuelos, they are mostly (not all) with southern last names. Not take it too scientifically though! :)
The Boca Junior soccer team, incorporated in 1905, even has the word "Xeneise" on their jerseys, which in the Ligurian dialect means Genoise.

Regarding Macri, I have not checked, but a very common Calabrian last name is Macrí (with the accented i), so it is possible his ancestors came from Calabria.

Regarding pizza, as an Italian who has been living abroad for almost a quarter of a century I am now appreciating most of all the variants I got to taste in local reputable pizzerias.

Google translate

Franco Macri's family (Mauricio Macri's father) has its roots in the Calabria region of Italy, specifically in towns like Polistena and Siderno. His father was born near Roccella Ionica in Calabria, while Franco was born in Rome, but his parents came from that area of southern Italy, from where they emigrated to Argentina. Polistena is known as the family's "homeland" and is a source of local pride due to the Macri family's success in Argentina.
