Looking for recommended wineries to visit between Colonia and Montevideo, going to be there on a Saturday and Sunday. Also any that just do tastings, without need to book in advance or do a whole tour, would be great!

Thanks!

Most of them you have to make advance reservations; drop-ins are uncommon but not impossible, perhaps with just a phone call ahead. I wrote an article about Uruguayan wineries several years ago at http://tinyurl.com/lktkyon; some of the info is outdated, but it should help you orient yourself. Most of them are family-run and extremely friendly.

There's no harm is asking. When i was down in patagonia a few years ago we popped into a few micro breweries as well as a family owned orchard. The guy made his own jams and a little perry. Quick phonecall and they all welcomed us warmly.

Narbona a few km before the town of Carmelo is BEAUTIFUL!!! I know they have a restaurant/ tasting room but I don't know about the hours or if you need a reservation.

Thanks! I've been to a lot of wineries in Argentina and Chile so I'm aware of the general customs, we did a couple near Carmelo a few years ago, but aren't heading in that direction this time. I've found that it's easier to drop in during the winter as they're not too busy, also sometimes it's more effective than calling as the wineries don't always answer the phone!

The wineries outside Montevideo can be a little hard to find if you don't know precisely where you're going. I would recommend Bouza, which is the most tourist-friendly of the bunch and has its own restaurant and a fantastic museum of antique vehicles: http://www.bodegabouza.com, http://tinyurl.com/kffmsbr

I strongly recommend their Albariño, though it's ideally a summer wine.
