Is It Just Me? Voluntary Deportation

Maybe you can't fly from Ezeiza to the US for $400, but you can fly one-way from Bogota to Florida on Jetblue for less than $200. A few months of en negro work (teaching English during the day, maybe bartending or nannying at night) should be enough to pay for bus travel to Colombia plus a $200...

    What did I say?

Well, I think it depends on what your idea of "good coffee" is. Personally, I can't stand the Argentine style of cafe torrado (diluted with sugar), and I think domestic brands like Cabrales taste like battery acid. And there are fewer and fewer places continuing to offer imported Illy or Lavazza...

    Inflation Wingers Post Here!

Cue Marksoc piping up to inform us that restaurants here are still cheap; we're all just going to the overpriced, "touristy" ones.

Last day of Granix promo tomorrow

All November long, the all-you-can-eat vegetarian cafeteria Granix has been offering a 20% discount on Mondays and Wednesdays (bringing the total down from $57 to $46.) I checked it out last week and ended up having a great lunch: soup, salad, pasta, quiche, stir-fry, eggplant milanesa, dessert...

10,000 new homes for the poor in....

Did you, by any chance, come to Argentina in anticipation of the implementation of the New World Order?

    The mega 15th!

Yeah, but have you ever been to a Long Island bar/bat mitzvah? Easily costs as much as a wedding.

    tomato juice in san telmo?

I used to buy La Campagnola tomato juice in Disco. The boxes were small (375 cm3), and the last time I looked was about a year ago (so not sure of current availability), but it's the only brand I've ever seen here.

    Aerolineas, we're through

Well. I stuck it out with them for 2 long years, but between this and this and that, looks like I won't be flying with them ever again. Shame, since their flights to Europe are usually $200-800 cheaper (with double the baggage allowance) than any other airline.

    Exchange Rate Robbery or Reasonable?

Landlords can continue insisting upon dollars if they want. I think they're just going to risk being faced with a vacant apartment pretty soon, since the difficulties of obtaining dollars have become completely unworth it for either locals or foreigners (and there are an awful lot of other...

How do people here afford McDonalds/Burger King?

Well, I personally don't touch that stuff, either. But at least America and its midscale-restaurant culture can't be blamed for any obesity resulting from one too many binges at El Cuartito ;)

How do people here afford McDonalds/Burger King?

Actually, as I understand it, you can. According to Argentine friends who regularly purchase it, there is a "combo" that costs only 20 pesos (and does not suffer from inflationary increases, thanks to your friendly local populist government.) It's not listed on the menu, but if you ask for it...

    Exchange Rate Robbery or Reasonable?

Whatever. Bully for her that she can get 4.80 on the black market -- the official exchange rate (and hence the only one you're responsible for) is what Banco de la Nacion says it is. I'd tell her to take it or leave it.

    Budget food-places

Siempre Verde in Chinatown is super-cheap vegetarian Taiwanese. The place is a real hole in the wall, but portions are HUGE and the food is a step up from the usual greasy Chinese.

I may bitch about BA, but...

Si, I remember the halcyon days of 2 kilos/$7 last February :( I don't know about SoCal, but I could not believe how expensive strawberries were in the Bay Area! In Florida, the strawberries come straight from nearby Plant City, but even there, 1 pound runs about $4.00 (or during strawberry...

    What you won't miss

Canned cranberry jelly is just unholy. I won't miss candied "yams." I love me a good sweet potato, but doused in sugar, butter, maple syrup, and marshmallows... not so much (especially in the South, where they are prepared so sweet they'll make your teeth ache.)

    Thanksgiving ingredients

I buy unshelled pecans at a small store on Rodriguez Pena and Peron. They're very fresh and 34 pesos for a kilo. You should be able to find them at a specialty store or dietetica in your barrio (or Disco/Carrefour, if you want to be wallet-raped), if you keep your eyes peeled. Cranberries, on...

Trying to make CORNBREAD (need help)

Going to attempt cornbread for Thanksgiving next week, and it sounds from the above posts like polenta is the way to go... Would anyone mind posting or PM'ing me a recipe for a successful cornbread they've made down here?

    Ladrones at LAN--help!

Yes, if you do a forum search, you'll find a few posts from non-residents who got away with flying on a resident ticket (by checking in online and bringing only a carry-on.) Might as well give it a shot!

I may bitch about BA, but...

... being able to eat my weight daily in fresh, insanely-cheap strawberries (2 kilos for $3.50 USD) makes up for an awful lot :D
