1 kg Beef: How Much Do You Pay?

Actually this is so far out of line it sounds more like a mistake. Have you gone back to the shop and asked?

Oh, that's a good point. Once at Disco, my GF bought a 20-peso apple, because their scale was ringing them up for $99.99/kilo instead of 9.99/kilo. Fortunately we noticed the mistake and received a refund, but definitely can happen.

In this instance I was charged 115 pesos for a kg of ground beef.
Too much? Just right?
Way out.

Best butcher in Mercado Central in Mendoza.
1 kg pre-ground meat: around AR$ 20 (not recommendable quality).
1 kg mince excellent quality: AR$ 36-42.
1 kg lomo AR$ 48-52.

Add 10-15% for BsAs.

At mercado central, a kg of ground beef cost around 10 pesos...

I called this morning to give him a chance and asked if hadn't perhaps been mistaken. He stood by the price though saying that he'd given me Nalga w/ no fat as I had requested (I requested no such thing--just "carne picada") which was 71 pesos a kilo (he sent me 1.6 kg for 115). He danced around a bit justifying it, but still didn't budge. I'm heartbroken to change, but I'm going to find another butcher.

Nalga is commonly used for milanesas and is not more than 40$ per kilo. Another thing is that any butcher that tells you in Argentina that he is grinding a certain cut is bullshitting, becasue they already have some cheap cuts inside the grinder and add the "good cut "on top that never makes it to your package....My father owned a butcher store in Recoleta before I was born... There are different butcher stores in Recoleta, I for one like to go to granja Converso in Alamgro, but you have on e on Azcuenaga and Juncal, another one on Arenales and Larrea ( both small )

Ok, you need to find a new butcher and watch carefully what they are charging you. You should also warn others of your experiences with this establishment. The best way to deal with businesses like these is not to do business with them.

I agree Avicar has very good prices and excellent meat if you have one nearby 1 kg roastbeef is 30 pesos.

My wife pointed out that you could report the guy to the defensa del consumidor in which case he may have a pay a fine. Just a thought. It would be nice for an expat to strike back at these people who play dirty.

dont laugh...they probably have the freshest beef around.
