American Breakfast

Pancakes are extremely easy to make from scratch. Idiot proof really. The syrup I'd take up the offer to have it muled down.

And if Baines is still in business please let us know because they stopped responding to my mails a long time ago and their bacon was DELISH

I was thinking homemade sausage was the best option or is there something like a breakfast link?
"Salchichas" (and not hot dogs, although hot dogs are sometimes called this as well) are sort of like breakfast links. Long and narrow like links, usually pretty good. They usually come in a flat package, "wound up" a single length instead of nice little link-sized pieces. Cut and cook.

Making homemade patties is not too difficult - I take a chorizo, remove the skin, add black pepper and a little bit of garlic powder and mix it up with the meat and make patties. Not as good as Jimmie Dean maybe, but pretty good. Cabana Las Lilas is my favorite chorizo brand.

You can also make something similar to bacon that we get in the States with panceta. Ask the place where you get the panceta (don't buy in the grocery store) to cut it thick. Go to Barrio Chino and buy some liquid smoke. Put the panceta in a tupperware container with a little bit of water, a good amount of liquid smoke and any seasoning you might like (salt, pepper, etc) and let it sit in the fridge over night. Take it out and let the strips dry on paper towels (in the fridge) and later it will be ready to fry. Not exact, but rather, reminiscent. Of course, you want to do a bunch as it is time-consuming - can't just pull it out of the package and go for it.

Of course, if the link Gringoboy provided for bacon is as good as it looks - forget what I just wrote about making your own bacon :) I'm going to have to try it!

As far as pancakes, they are really, really easy to make without the pre-packaged stuff we buy in the States. The syrup is the only thing that is very difficult to find here (used to find Aunt Jemima's in Jumbo every once in awhile). I had someone bring me down a couple of quarts of real maple syrup a year ago and I use it sparingly...

The hard thing about making an American breakfast in BA is finding bacon or decent sausage...

Nothing hard about that - I get my bacon (English Style) from Larry (El Tejano) and my sausages from the germans at Bratwurst Argentina. I also have several litres of maple syrup that I have never got round to using. Does it go off? A canadian girl gave it to me a couple of years ago after she came to dinner. I'm pretty sure that you can make very adequate pancakes without mix!!!

Edit...Baines Best is now prepared by Larry the Texan

Gringoboy, that's food porn!!!!!!! shouldn't be allowed i hate you
I'm on my 5th stew day i misjudged the quantities so i made a little more than i thought.....ohhh btw for those of you who like spicy foods, find LOCOTO at the verduleria it is good stuff if you wanna numb your mouth!

I brought an extra bottle of maple syrup with me to sell here. Also an extra box of Aunt Jemimas pancake mix. The only thing missing is the bacon! Anyone interested please pm me.

sell???

All of us expats are your friends, Lacky!

You share things with friends, not sell it to them.

Haha, all expats are my friends?,hahahahaha, wait stop I need air!
Yes I definately believe in sharing with friends, which is why I made space and paid overweight bag charges...to give my friends the opportunity to access something that they miss. And now I'm asking them to SHARE the costs involved in finding those real American breakfast foods in BA. I'm all about sharing! :)

By the way Jumbo in Palermo has been selling freshly made bagels (three different types). You can buy them individually (13pesos each) and I found them the best I've had here. They also have Philadelphia cream cheese and smoked salmon. So here's a different expat breakfast option also available to all of us

By the way, I like putting a little maple syrup on the bacon here (I prefer using the uncooked pancetta and then to spread it with a thin layer of maple syrup)In either case good easy traditional American breakfasts that we can serve in the comfort of our homes.
