I am a US citizen and am applying for residency in Argentina via marriage. I was born in Germany (Father US Army, mother German) and lived there until 18 months of age, so I am assuming that I will need a criminal background check for there too though it seems ridiculous!

I have no German documentation other than a birth certificate and my US birth certificate states that I am a US citizen born abroad. I also have another US government issued document entitled "report of birth of US citizen abroad."

I tried to have my US birth certificate apostilled by the US State Dept and they returned it to me without further instruction on what to do other than I needed to do it in the state in which I was born.

Is this the correct entity in Germany to request a criminal background check?

Can anyone tell me if I in fact need a background check from my country of birth though I only lived there as a baby?

Also, where does one get an apostille for a birth certificate and criminal background check in Germany?

Thanks for any info.

You only need criminal checks for any countries you have resided in in the last 5 years

Your birth certificate is the newer form FS 240? The State Dept should have given you more directions on how to acquire the apostille.
On their website it says:
Applicants who are requesting an Apostille to Consular Reports of Birth Abroad only should contact our office regarding this process.

I found this on the Amsterdam site.

It seems you can either try again to have your copy apostilled, or ask for a new birth certificate and have them apostille it at the same time.

In Germany you can get your international / multi-language birth certificate from the "Standesamt" in the city (or district for smaller towns) where you were born. In my case I was able to order it via the city's website (cost 10 Euros). Then mail it to corresponding authority on the state level to get it [background=rgb(252, 252, 252)]apostilled[/background] (cost me 23 Euros).

Edit: What city where you born in?

Yes, that would be the place to get the background check and then get it apostilled at the BVA: http://www.bva.bund....ungen-node.html

Hmm, I am European as well, but the last 3 years I have been a perma-tourist with Arg kids and wife. Would this mean they would not require this doc or would they still want it as I officially did not reside here and perma-tourist is something you should not disclose? I have not resided in Europe for over 6 years, but am registered there.

You need to have your US birth cert apostilled in the state that it was "issued." The state is notarizing that it is a legal document from their state. The US federal govt does not apostille birth certificates, only federally issued docs.

I had been here for more than the 3 years (on tourist visa only) when I applied and they still wanted the the apostilled document from Germany...

I was not born in a US State. My birth certificate is issued by the Dept Of State since I was born a US citizen abroad.

MDZ, I was born in Nurnberg.
