ATM machines and USD

I've agreed to pay my landlord up front for a number of months rent in USD. I bank with Citi, and figured I'd just go to an ATM machine at one of the branches that isn't a banelco machine and take the $ out piece by piece with no ATM fees. It's annoying, but I think that should work. However, I'm wondering if there are Citibank ATM machines in the city that give out USD. I've heard of them, but nobody can quite tell me where they are.

Anyone?

Thanks.

I think you may have made a mistake becuase you're going to have to withdraw pesos and then pay outrageous rates to convert to dollars. Citi has some banks and ATMs around Bs. As., there's one on Santa Fe within a few blocks of Pueyrredon but I don't remember the address. There's another in the lower part of Microcentro, but I don't even remember the name of the street. Look on Citi's Argentinian website for 'sucursales' or 'cajeros' The thing is, I don't think you'll be able to withdraw dollars from your US account, the only time you can withdraw dollars down here is if you open a dollar-based account in Argentina.

There's a Citibank ATM on Santa Fe y Cnl Diaz, a block away from the Alto Palermo mall. It does have one of those dollar machines, but when I tried to withdraw some (overcome by curiosity, didn't even need dollars that day!) it didn't work, because I have an international account.

I've never heard one legit report of anyone drawing US$ from an ATM here. I think it's an urban myth. If you do find US$ from and ATM please report it.

So what do you guys think with respect to the landlord? Just take the pesos out and convert to dollars? Any better way?

Oh - to reiterate, it's not the Citi ATM I have a problem finding... it's the one that gives dollars, which apparently doesn't seem to exist. Or might, but doesn't work.

The only way to take out dollars in Argentina from ANY ATM is if you have a local account (and not only a local account, but a local dollar account). That is the ONLY way you can do it. Otherwise, impossible despite people telling you otherwise.

You have two options (well 3 actually). First is to find out if the landlord has an account overseas or takes paypay, etc. Many people do. If so, you can transfer the money that way. If no - then you have two options. ask the landlord nicely if he/she will accept the peso equivalent (and usually you will pay a slight amount extra to cover the conversion fees). Or take the pesos and go t a money exchange place.

Cheers.

Why don't you just go to a bank with your credit card and passport and see if they will let you take out USD on the credit card?

The other option I have heard of but not tried myself is to go to a Casino where you can use the credit card to get chips issued to you. Walk around the casino for a bit, maybe play a hand or two if you want - then go get chips converted to USD.
