Parental visit, taking them down to Bariloche. Having seen the temperatures I am starting to wish we had gone north but no point sweating over that now.

We have 5 nights, I reckon we'll hire a car since the temps are a little lower, more condusive to motoring around than coaches.

Any recommendations down there for car hire?

Yeah, cost of petrol doesn't raise an eye brow for me I'm afraid. It's not cheap, but it's not the worst ! Will have a look at eurocar....shouldn't they consider a rebrand in South America!?

Haha probably! I think the small car hire businesses will be cheaper than thrifty and Eurocar, but shop around, we couldn't be bothered because is was freezing and pouring with rain. Also, they only give you 200km, which conveniently isn't quite enough to do the small circuit and take a trip to Villa la Angostura and back. So including the cost of fuel and a few extra kms, it was an extra 50% on top of the days hire. That aside, the car was very good, a fairly new Peugeot with around 10,000km, it managed the offroad bit to Colonia Suiza quite well and handed the wet roads with no problems.

I've used thrifty and hertz. Thrifty was much cheaper and the car was decent and I had no problem with the check in check out etc.

I have nothing good to say about hertz other than the car miraculously didn't break

The local companies are cheaper:

I hired one from eurocar, it wasn't that expensive, but the cost of petrol will probably make you cry.

If you drive south, to El Bolsón and Esquel, gasoline is cheaper there because of the "Patagonia discount." I personally enjoy that area more than Bariloche.

make sure you master driving up hill with stick on frozen pavement with bus drivers stoping right behind you (no room to back the car if the car stops)

Driving "stick" is more natural to me than automatic, ice is no bother either. I would nearly look fwd to it.
