Best Beaches / Closest?

No you're not out hybrid san.
But ceviche san , the poor thing, can't afford punta del este. So I thought I'd make him a charity case..
Cuidado ! The looks can be deceiving..Once saw a shocking picture. One minute sitting in the walkways of Manhattan
looking all rag head and begging for a few token donations, then later saw him in the back streets of times square, entering his pristine
Cadillac but before he was changing to his three piece suit...So Ceviche-san, sometimes with his puzzling frugal minded comments but
in truth he is a very wealthy Congo prince!

The nearest marine (sea) beach is San Clemente del Tuyu, located about 250 Km from. It is an small town with a nice Sea World aquarium and a nice spa with termal waters. The drawback is that is a place for family vacation, no fun at night. I have an aptmt there at 50 yards from the sand.
I would recommend instead Pinamar, a posher place with a great nightlife. All beaches in the Atlantic coastline can be reached by bus, (forget trains, they are for the birds, literally).
PS: I would like to see a picture of your bikini (with you inside, of course)

I second San Clemente del Tuyu. Its a nice town, with a long clean beach. Nothing special though, more suited for families than anything. The usual arcades, family restaurants, etc. Only thing I didnt like was the week we went it was a constant strong wind that blew the sand everywhere, and its a real sticky sand. Plus no showers on the beach meant you brought half the beach back with you to the hotel.
Forget Mar del Plata if you dont like tacky, overcrowded, overrated beach resorts. I hated it.

I don't understand how Mar del Plata is the closest beach when if you are going to stay in Argentina the much better beaches are Pinamar and Carilo. They are nice little towns worth a visit for a weekend maybe, instead of just a city by the beach they are towns constructed amongst forest and dunes.

HOWEVER

Going to beach in Argentina if you have any option of going to Brazil is ridiculous. My MIL has a place on the coast and we never really go, the water is freezing, I think it's colder than swimming in Maine! If we want a beach holiday and we have money we go anywhere but the Argentine coast. The argentine coast is expensive as well, more and more Argies are going to Brazil because the rentals there are cheaper.

But yes, if you want to be able to get on a bus and go for a weekend, go to Carilo, Pinamar, or Villa Gesell. Don't go as far as Mar del Plata, it's not worth it. If you have the money instead of a bus from Retiro which is pretty awful (though if you've ever travelled by bus in the Middle East it won't really surprise you, though the environment itself at the bus station is pretty horrible, Retiro is kind of like the central bus terminal in Istanbul) -- take a combi -- a 6-12 passenger van that will pick you up at your doorstep and drop you off at your hotel on the other end -- the smaller the combi the better as it will mean less travel time since they will have less stops on either end. You can see prices here: http://www.lomasexpr...mos-a-la-costa/

Its not *that* cold around Pinamar in Summer, certainly not freezing. I was in the sea all the time last Februrary, but its a very rough dirty sea because of all the sand and currents. And trust me i`ve swam in a few seas from the very North of Scotland to the tropics of Mauritius.
Personally i`d fly to florianopolis in Brazil, less than 2 hours flight , and with the airport wait prettymuch the same time as the bus would take to the beach south of BA, but downside is more expensive. But much nicer beaches and sea temperature.

Rio de la Plata ends at Bahia de San Borombón, and nearby San Clemente beach is with its oceanic water, very cold if you are used to the mediterranean see.

You can go for the day to Peru Beach by public transportation and walk almost 1 km to get to the beach of rio de la plata. It is around 1 hour trip from capital federal.

Another option is go to delta del tigre, where there are many sand beaches. Tigre is also 1 hour from city of buenos aires. You get to tigre and then you can take the catamaran or lancha colectiva.

There is a very cool and not expensive spot in delta, Puerto arroyón, telef: 4728-1088. It is a parrilla which has an annexed beach very comfortable, with a bar that offers drinks and brasilian music on weekends. There are cabins next to this parrilla: El sitio dorado.

There are outdoor pools around city of buenos aires, and many people go to the parks to get their sun baths. You also have the chance to go to a "cama solar" to get a fast tan.

Thumbs up to the beaches around Pinamar and Carilo. We've been going there for 15 years of summers and we love it. Many of the same families in the same cabanas at the same balnearios year after year. I'm from Northern California, so the ocean water there feels refreshing to me, compared to the freezing Pacific. Few foreign tourists, lots to do at night (especially Villa Gesell depending on your age) and a great vibe. The only challenge is finding an available place this late in the season. Most good places are booked up by October, although there has been so much development in recent years so it may be easier.

We always take the bus...Plusmar direct from Retiro. Pay a little bit more and you can get the suite bus with seats that go flat. Their buses are always clean and the drivers are careful and conscientious. Just make sure to get a seat upstairs.

Not sure about all these negative comments about Argentine beaches. Sure, it's not Brazil, but we love the area.

Speaking to most Argentines they seem to dislike the beaches here, the majority I know who can afford it go to Brazil or Carribean, some even drive for 1-2 days to get to the beaches in Brazil. I actually liked Pinamar area when we visited, but my Argentine wife hated it.

Pinamar is very different from Carilo. If you're in your twenties and want lots of beach activity and parties at night, Pinamar is more hustle and bustle. Carilo is better for a mellow beach scene, good restaurants, atmosphere and shopping. Villa Gesell is a whole different scene...full of teenagers.

Just to suntan, no swimming, I'd go to Delta del Tigre as suggested. I understand there're moskitos during the summer.
I've only been to the Argentine coast once and liked it better than I expected.
the nicer part of Pinamar is to the North, and it really does become nice with all the man-planted pine forests, the suburban houses with beautiful lawns, and the savage sand dunes which are actually natural, beautiful, and not destroyed to the Northern Limits of the city.
The problem there as the crowds disappear are those enchanting motor karts that both destroy the dunes and your peace and quiet. Otherwise it's lovely, clean(er) and rather safe.
Mar de las Pampas is an expensive planned community just a long walk south of disgusting Villa Gesell.
The least expensive option (even less expensive than Tigre I believe, if you don't count the trip) would be, again as mentioned, the Northernmost part, "partido de la costa" with Mar del Tuyu, or to my preference, "Nueva Atlantis", where you can see the pampas break into the ocean, and ride horses for quiet cheap on the beach and the surroundings.

Just as a curiosity: Mar del Plata was founded by English people (that's why it looks SO MUCH like Brighton). Pinamar and Villa Gesell by German Nazis and Socialists respectively. One is cleaner than the other, guess which.

Brand new trains to Mar del Plata from Constitucion Station...!!! 290 Pesos in Pullman beats the Bus Fare on the Average is $400..
