The drivers punch in the fare, but it isn't always the correct price. I don't get my Sube card anywhere near the scanner until I visually verify what I'm paying. Too many times a $1.25 fare was $1.75, even after TELLING the driver UNO VIENTECINCO!
I've been here almost a year, and 6 months ago an inspector checked the entire bus for a paper receipt or scanned each Sube card. This was on a Bus packed like a sardine can.
It doesn't happen often, but it certainly can.
