Button Has Arrived At Ezeiza

just came through aeroparque this morning...3 huge bags with all kinds of non-electronic goodies (including 15 piece cookware set). There was only one line and they seemed to be in a hurry to get people through. A customs person stood at the head of the line pushing the button and telling people to go when it was green or to go to the x-ray machine when it turned up red. A few in line with huge tvs just got told directly to go to the Xray machine. There were signs saying "Nothing to Declare Here" and "Declaring Items Here" but the customs person just had us all in one line. I went to the machine put all my bags up. Played the dumb foreigner thing when asked if I was traveling alone or with family...then he asked me in English where I was from, I responded USA and he just waved me through without paying much attention to what was in my bags.

My overall take: More attentive than before, green light equals total freedom, red equals former system of them scanning your bags, except they are paying slightly more attention (i.e. less chatting and texting while x-raying your bags).

Well, I arrived today at Ezeiza.

The customs officer decided I am not worthy of pressing the button like others ahead of me.

I was asked to go and put my luggage in the x ray anyway without pressing the button.

Now someone will comment - maybe they are waiting for someone who looks exactly like me!

For the first time , I saw lot of dogs at the customs.

Enforcement is not a bad thing. But it does go hand in hand with making the enforced rules reasonable, otherwise the incentives to corrupt the system become too great.

300 is simply too little and 50% is draconian - make the limits more reasonable and there is much less incentive to short circuit the system.

Can dogs sniff out electronics? Only drugs AFAIK - but I admit to knowing little in this regard.

I remember reading (or seeing on TV) that dogs can also be be trained to sniff out explosives and currency.

I believe there have been currency sniffing dogs at EZE for many years, but I'm not sure if dogs are (or can be) trained to sniff out more than one substance.

Drugs , currency and food , especially sausages apparently

Normally dogs become a specialist in one area.....

Not sure if they can change over once theri smelling skills get tired.

If the dog is wearing an AFIP vest, most likely looking for money. I've seen those.

Also, especially if you're coming from Spain, they have agriculture dogs looking for ham/jamon and other embutidos. I've seen people get caught with those. :p Here at least they only take it away... you get caught by an agriculture dog in MIA and you're looking at a $300 fine for an orange.

wax paper is the same as napkins...not much difference

Waxed napkins and wax paper are two entirely different entities. Wax paper is neither manufactured nor used as a napkin. One would be wasting their time trying to use wax paper as a napkin, for said product is made to resist absorption, as much as possible, of liquid or wettish items.
