Free market capitalism works brilliantly in Somalia.

Well Scottswan, if you did a bit of research, Somalia's economy isn't "terrible". In fact their GDP growth was larger than the US in 2008/2009. Why, because the PRIVATE sector has little Government interference.

The problem with Somalia is terror which is rampant because they have little national security.

Point: keep the Government OUT of business and keep them strong on national security.

yes because the lack of government regulations is really helping out with their ecology.

Things are just rosy in Somalia just now.

Go free market!

So, are we talking about the economy, pirates, or humanitarian needs?? All different issues. Make up your mind and then we can have a reasonable discussion? Pirates?? LOL Seriously??

g'd morning

As even the CIA factbook admits:

"Despite the seeming anarchy, Somalia's service sector has managed to survive and grow. Telecommunication firms provide wireless services in most major cities and offer the lowest international call rates on the continent. In the absence of a formal banking sector, money exchange services have sprouted throughout the country, handling between $500 million and $1 billion in remittances annually. Mogadishu's main market offers a variety of goods from food to the newest electronic gadgets. Hotels continue to operate, and militias provide security."

Oh you are so right! These are completely unrelated..... None of them are symptoms of the lack of Government and having in essence a completely free market.

That's what I find so laughable about your type. Even with factual evidence to prove your initial comments wrong, you keep trying to twist things into an anti free market rant. Sad really but you aren't fooling anyone.

Sweet Jesus! Somalia's GDP per capita is estimated to be a whopping $600 in 2010, versus ~$47,000 in the U.S.

The tourism sector is booming, though.

We were talking about GDP growth rate, not per capita. In 2009 it was 2.6%.

The U.S. was 1.3% but most economists believe it was closer to 1.1%.

Even if it was 5%, I would in no way want to live in Somalia. It's just a step or two below Argentina, right?
