Canned Seafood

how are you guys eating yr canned fish/seafood.

May I have some recipee, please?

do you wash it before eating?

what do you do with the oil on it?

I just eat anchovies and sardines. I eat them straight, maybe with some lemon. I don't wash, and I eat some of the oil.

I'm still trying to find this canned Salmon:

I tried Ostramar, they don't have it. I found it at a place in Calafate, for 110 pesos per can. But I can't find it in Buenos Aires. Anyone?

Polostar88, this is a serious question, not trying to make light of your food concerns: why do you say the fresh fish here is so bad? I consider myself relatively literate when it comes to fish: I grew up on the coast of Norway with lots of fresh fish, and my grandfather also did lots of river fishing so I grew up on both river and salt water fish. I did the purchasing for a hotel restaurant here for 18 months and went to the central market for fish once or twice a month. The fish was always fresh and delicious; the fish section opens about 1 or 1:30am, right as the shipments arrive on ice from southern Argentina or from Chile. It was all very good, and the chef said so too (Argentine but has worked plenty both in the south and abroad, including in places that specialize in fish). Trout in Norway is good but some of the trout we bought there was fantastic!

I find the fish at Chipper Fish and Chips to be very good. Great selection, also many non-fried option.

what is "tilapia" and "red snapper" called here, when going to buy it?

sorry for the ignorance!

Tilapia is called tilapia, they do have some commercial raised tilapia here I believe, but I don't see it around much at all. Red snapper is pargo, don't really see that either but maybe because I am not looking.

Dear is there a blog lost where u describe fish in Argentina?
Since u bought seafood for a hotel and this cones as a great surprise as i respect Norwegians for both their seafood and stier and i find it very happy that youre somewhat satisfied with the options available here.
At the moment im at spanish restaurant el burladero de uriburu. The shrimp gambas al ajillo wwere well prepared and the shrimp was quiet fat and tasty for arg standards but nothing otherwordly.
Im having chipirobes ("baby" squid) which are not baf but are kinda rubbery and not baby at all.
Where ia the central fish market?
Can you get shellfish?
I love clams but i only find them scattered in diagusting frozen paella packages at disco or coto.
I know there are some productive oyster beds in the Patagonian coast of pcia BsAs and one experimental clam farm staryed by a Korean who killed himself.
Steve you probablu ignore me because of Harry Potter, but do you have any insight on oyster and clam culture? You live close by

No, I haven't done any fish blogging, maybe I should! Once a guest came with us, she took some amazing photos and posted them on her blog, but it seems to be temporary unavailable.

The central market is just off Ricchieri, kilometro 17. (Autopista Ricchieri y Boulogne Sur Mer, B1771B1A Tapiales.) The "fish hangar" is a little ways from the fruits and vegetables, I will see if I can mark it on a map. Tuesday to Friday they open around 1 or 2am and close by 6:30am. Saturdays they do a "feria minorista" starting at 7:30am where they have good variety, including shell fish, but what they have differ from week to week. On the mayorista days, I always went to the one straight ahead when you enter. The head guy is a bald guy with a loud deep voice. Sometimes they have shellfish, sometimes just certain frozen shellfish. Clams I don't remember...

Be careful if you go, the fish part is pretty ok but the rest of the market can be a little scary. I was always told that when Moreno was minister of the interior, he kept it safe by different pressures, and that it has gotten more dangerous after.

Edited to add: While I believe there is good product available, the fish and seafood served in restaurants are often not good at all.
