In our plans to get married, I was surprised this morning by our registro civil. Apparently I need a "certificado de solteria" to get married? I'm not even sure what that is or where to get it. I could ask my parents in the US to fax it, but I'm not sure what the document is called in English or where to apply for it.

Has anyone had to go through this before? From my research on this site I thought I was good to go with my passport and I haven't seen any threads about this document. I'm in provincia, 3 de febrero, so I'm not sure if the rules are different than in Capital... but they shouldn't be! :p

I should add that I'm single, never been married before.

I was never asked for one, and would not know how to get one. I was asked for a baptismal certificate from my church for the church ceremony, and I got it within about ten days.

I went with my passport and a valid tourist visa...thats all that they wanted...except for the fact that I was forced to hire a translator that cost 800 pesos...for not even 30 minutes of work...1600 pesos an hour...

Go to another registro civil?

Well this turned out to be the solution! Even though technically we're not allowed to go to another registro, the one we went to in the neighboring localidad accepted us after some pleading. :p In Capital you have more choices where you can go.

Hopefully it all goes well and they don't change their mind!

I think the lady at the other registro was just being difficult. She is also making my fiance and one of our witnesses redo their DNI because she deemed them "illegible"... they're a little worn, but still readable!

nothing like the power of "NO !" in the hands of the ignorant to ruin ones day

Glad to hear it all worked out. I was just married in December and they did not require any proof that I was single. All I showed was my US passport. PS: Congratulations!
