I'm 22 weeks pregnant with my first baby and will be giving birth in Buenos Aires, in May. After reading various posts on the Women's Forum, I am feeling a little anxious about how medicalised the process seems to be here.
In an ideal world I would have my baby in a hospital that offered facilities for waterbirth. I would like to have the option to at least labour in water, if not deliver in the pool, but that does not seem to be possible. I would also like to have the option to use alternative approaches to pain relief, ie hypnotherapy and acupuncture, rather than epidural.
Instead, I have read that obstetricians here are controlling, pro intervention, quick to resort to Caesarian, insist on drips, on childbirth taking place in hospital beds etc. The home birth route is not an option for me, for various reasons, but I sincerely hope there is some middle ground between the two, and that someone reading this might have the experience to point me in that direction?
Thanks.

Lallie, my sister gave birth 3 times in Buenos Aires and her obstetrician did what she wanted: no anesthesia, her husband with her, less med interventions as possible, no problems with bed.
She was born in water, many years ago in BA too.
PM if you want his contact details.

My advice is: don't give up your search. There are many good doctors in Argentina and with various styles.

Maybe a good start could be looking for the hospital that offers waterbirth and then check which obstetricians work for that hospital.

Good luck and congratulations!
Ur baby gonna be an argie!

Have your baby at la clinica Suizo Argentina http://www.cymsa.com.ar/frontend/
or have your baby in your home country.

Thanks, I read elsewhere cymsa was recommended and looked at the website, I'm planning to visit in person with my list of questions. I'm happy our baby will be born in Argentina, maybe that didn't come across in my post as I am feeling specially anxious today.

Thanks Lolimundo for your congratulations and very encouraging reply! I will PM you as I would love the contact details for your sister's obstetrician. Cheers.

Hi Lallie,
I recommend you visit Dr. Guillermo Lodeiro Martinez. He advocates natural birth without epidural, without drips, and where the baby stays with the mother at all times.
He's my current ob-gyn and has advised me to have my baby at Sanatorio Trinidad de Palermo (or at home) where the rules are much more relaxed than at other hospitals.
His address is Santa Fe 2534 1B Tel 5275-0433

been in Sanatorio Trinidad a couple of times visiting friends and newborns and appears to be nice!

I´ve had 3 kids here in BA, the first two with epidurals (I wanted them so didn't even think to ask for it otherwise) and the third one natural thanks to a very surprisingly quick and light labour.
My friend had her baby here without and epidural. It can happen, you just have to insist. As for water births, if you do find out where they do those, that would be great info to post here. (NOT that I'm planning on having any more!)
On a slightly different topic, while the midwives and ob-gyns are pushy and know-it-all, the post natal care at the clinics mentioned in other posts is out of this world! Wonderful. They send you every kind of specialist you could possible want to show you what to do with a newborn!

I agree, AngelinBA, the aftercare at Otamendi was excellent, with a speed-dial to the lactancia specialist. I was just v. upset that they wouldn't let me touch my (healthy) baby for over 2 hours, but that's another matter...

We had our child at Otamendi last Dec 2009. Amazing clinic, amazing staff!

I have been to other private clinics but Otamendi is 10 times better than any of them.
