Uruguay starts the development of an oral vaccine prototype against COVID-19, what is it? Local scientists are looking for the modification of the Salmonella bacteria to provide mucosal protection. In the laboratories of the Hygiene Institute of Uruguay, local scientists started the development of a prototype of an oral vaccine against COVID-19. According to Alejandro Chabalgoity, a professor at Udelar's Department of Biotechnological Development, "if we want to eradicate the new coronavirus, we will almost certainly have to have other types of vaccines, such as mucosal or oral vaccines"....
....The research has just begun, but it is known in advance that, in case it is successful, scientists will have to work with foreign organizations or companies. The fact is that Uruguay does not have a vaccine manufacturing plant necessary for clinical trials. The country does not have such a plant, neither from local private companies nor from the State. The construction of such a plant is part of the Vaccine Institute project for which the Parliament has just approved an initial allocation of money, but it would take years to be operational; perhaps longer than the time needed to test the oral vaccine against COVID-19 made in Uruguay.
