Covid Vaccination Argentina

It remains to be seen how this plan to vaccinate teaching personnel will affect vaccination plans by age groups, starting with 80 years and up.
Excerpts / Highlights:
The national government announced the start of the vaccination campaign for teaching staff across the country with the doses developed by the Chinese Sinopharm laboratory.
A part of the batch of 904 thousand doses that will arrive on Thursday night from Beijing are destined to immunize teachers starting next week.
Within days of the start of classes in much of the country, the Ministry of Health made the decision to begin vaccinating teaching personnel in order to immunize as many male and female teachers as possible at the beginning of the school year.
"Health, Security and Armed Forces personnel are already being vaccinated.
The time has come to start vaccinating the teachers who will be in front of the classrooms with our children," they explained to Página / 12from Casa Rosada."

During the meeting, the operational details for the start of the vaccination of teachers in all jurisdictions were discussed since, as confirmed by sources who participated in the meeting, all ministers agreed on the importance of starting with the immunization of teaching staff.

Coinciding with the start date of classes, the vaccines will begin to be distributed next week.
" An equitable and federal distribution will be made among the provinces, as has been done until now," the Presidency indicated , so it is calculated that the distribution percentages for each jurisdiction will be the same.
The one million Sinopharm vaccines, however, will not be destined exclusively for teaching personnel, but will depend on how advanced the different stages of vaccination are in each province.

In jurisdictions in which, as in the City of Buenos Aires, part of the Health workers still need to be vaccinated, the remaining Health personnel must first be advanced .
The vaccination of teachers, then, will not be homogeneous and simultaneous, but will subordinate the rate of vaccination of each place.

EXCERPTS from a speech by the President on his recent return from Mexico:
The President clears up and summarizes the schedule ahead for vaccinations.
"Tonight 900 thousand doses of one of the Chinese vaccines will arrive in Argentina . They will be used to vaccinate workers in educational establishments. They are added to the injections of the Gamaleya and AstraZeneca institutes that began to be inoculated at the end of December to health personnel and the elderly."
The President promised that he will continue working to acquire more doses and confirmed, new components from the Russian development Sputnik V will arrive this weekend and new vaccines from AstraZeneca during March.

He also addressed the recent malicious, distracting and monotonous droning of the media.
“When I see in newspapers, on TV and on the networks that debates are generated that force us to ignore what is important, I think of those men who did not have this adversity, that is to fight against malicious preaching, against haughty voices that get up and they forget what they did when they had to work for the Argentines”.

Regards the distribution of the vaccines that arrived
So far Argentina has received 2,704,000 doses of three vaccines, Sputnik V, Oxford / AstraZéneca and Sinopharm . The Public Vaccination Monitor, however, states that 1,737,000 vaccines have been distributed so far, of which 903,000 have been applied.

Although the big newspapers use these numbers to give the impression that there is a backlog,
the reality is that vaccines and registration have their process.
- Recent arrival
- Customs usually takes four or five days minimum,
- Dose 2 to a vaccination center, they cannot apply them because they must wait the required time.
- There are discrepancies in the registration. For example, in the Province of Buenos Aires 420,000 doses were applied and 299,000 were applied.

The opposition and the mainstream media aligned with Cambiemos use every nook and cranny to harass the national government on the issue of vaccines. Days and days were dedicated to the fact that there were about 30 vaccines applied to people who did not correspond, an episode for which Minister Ginés González García had to resign.
As is often the case, they also rushed Comodoro Py to prosecute an act that is penalized for very minor crimes, some that have as a penalty disqualification (embezzlement), or failure to fulfill the duties of a public official (part of a month in prison). It is clear that no one took money into their pockets, that there was no negotiation, so the crimes are minor. Still, Comodoro Py does not miss the show and Cambiemos, which let millions of vaccines expire and reduced the health structure to a minimum.

The entire production process of the Sputnik V comes with delays due to two factors. The first is that it became a highly sought-after vaccine, due to its efficiency and its very few negative effects. The second reason is that the process of transferring technology from the Gamaleya Institute to a laboratory in India is taking a long time. Apparently they are fine-tuning quality control.

Although the big newspapers use these numbers to give the impression that there is a backlog, the reality is that vaccines and registration have their process:
  • There are 580,000 doses that arrived last Tuesday and that will only be applied in the next few days. Therefore, it is obvious that they could not be applied.
  • It happens that, when they arrive, the vaccines have to be "customs", then "customs-free", they must be taken to a warehouse, accounted for, divided logistically, taken to the vaccination centers. That usually takes four or five days, minimum.
  • In addition, even if they send dose 2 to a vaccination center, they cannot apply them because they must wait the required time.
  • There are discrepancies in the registration. For example, in the Province of Buenos Aires 420,000 doses were applied and 299,000 were applied.
  • In general, there are no delays in almost any province: the vaccines that arrive are applied.
Boost to the vaccination campaign
The arrival of more than 1,500,000 vaccines allows accelerating the vaccination of older people .
As is known, Sinopharm's Chinese vaccines were intended for teachers, mainly because they are not approved for those over 60 . To the
904,000 that arrived on Thursday night will be added the 96,000 that will come on scheduled flights and will be in Ezeiza on Sunday.
But the Sputnik that come now will give the opportunity, for example, to advance in the vaccination of CABA and in other districts where they could only be applied to people over 80.

Everything indicates that in the City of Buenos Aires the shifts will be opened for the elderly 70 or 75 , it depends exactly on the amount that arrives.

The Argentina government's vaccination program continues faced with fractioning the vaccinations given the necessities of roll out with a limited and epochal refresh of supply of vaccines.
"The city of Buenos Aires implemented a gap of ten to twelve weeks in the interval between the application of the two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to those over 80 years of age.
Gabriel Battistella, Undersecretary of Primary Care, spoke with Página / 12 and defended the initiative, "based on what the Nation approves for each jurisdiction." He said that there are 40 thousand registered to be vaccinated and that there are another 70 thousand "who have already been registered" and are on a waiting list. "Until the first week of March the shifts are covered," they clarified.
He also highlighted the fact that it has been detected that "the levels of antibodies raised by a person who went through the disease and receives the vaccine are higher than those they had at the time of transit.
In Debbag's opinion, vice president of the Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectology, regardless of the vaccine, it is a "good strategy" to immunize as many people as possible with one dose and wait as long as possible before the second dose. And he pointed to the universe of those over 60 years old. "In the country there are seven million people over 60 years old. 82 percent of people who contracted covid-19 are older than that age. With immunization eight out of ten deaths are prevented." He also noted that mass vaccination of those over 60 in Israel reduced mortality by up to 95 percent.
The Lancet reaffirmed the greater effectiveness in the case of AstraZeneca with the interval of almost three months between the first dose
and the second. The effectiveness is 81 percent compared to 55 in those who had both doses in a shorter period of time.
Then contemplate this...
Debbag was not convinced with the possibility of vaccinating those who had the coronavirus. "They already have a high level of protection from antibodies, it is better to immunize those who need to generate antibodies, which are the ones who did not get infected." In this sense, he said that "you have to think about a customized vaccination program."

Coronavirus: the Province applied more than half a million vaccines
"We passed the 500 thousand applications in the Buenos Aires territory.
The vaccination campaign took pace and does not stop. This is the way to leave the pandemic behind," celebrated the provincial vice minister of Health, Nicolás Kreplak, this afternoon and summoned the people of Buenos Aires , who have not yet done so, to continue registering on the Vacunate portal to be able to be registered while waiting for a shift, according to the number of vaccines that arrive in the country and the health priorities defined for each age group.

Buenos Aires Vacunate is the province's public, free and optional coronavirus vaccination plan, launched at the end of December, the largest in the history of Buenos Aires.
The website has a shift manager so that vaccination is "organized, agile and does not represent a risk of overcrowding" in the application centers. The people who sign up go on to integrate the list in the database, and then they are assigned the corresponding shift.

At the beginning of February, when the two million registrations were surpassed, Kicillof lamented the opposition campaign to "want to convince people that the vaccine is dangerous and that the disease is not" and highlighted the effort of each municipality to collaborate with the registration system.

The president called to overcome "sabotage" and highlighted the pre-registration system, thanks to which the vaccination plan can be organized, which is not mandatory and requires written consent.

After 3 days without any mention of the programs of vaccinations and vaccine arrivals, while doing all they could on their pages of Yellow Journalism to stir up hate and support tearing down the current government, La Nacion launched this one important but poorly written explanation of the confusing paucity of vaccinations taking place in Capital Federal.

As the nation receives the batches of the different vaccines, it allocates them to the provinces according to the percentage of the general population of each district in the national total, instead of estimating the distribution by population to be vaccinated. This also slows down the advance of vaccination.

This means that while 9% of the country's older adults live in the city and it concentrates 19% of the total health providers and their workers (about 160,000), the district receives 7% of the vaccines that arrive in the country in each flight according to the projection of the population by provinces of the Indec.
“That ends up being excessively unfair because the allocation should be by population at risk, rather than the general population. Thus, an inappropriate dose quota reaches the city, ”Quirós observed.

If it were not for the delay in the arrival of doses to the country, the City affirms that they could cover the Covid-19 vaccination of the entire prioritized population in two months. That reaches 1.2 million porteños who enter one of the six stages of the campaign designed by the national government last December.
“We have an installed capacity to vaccinate 25,000 people per day. In the city, in two months we could complete the vaccination ”, said the Minister of Health, Fernán Quirós , about the 1.2 million people that make up the prioritized groups. "And we could expand that capacity a little more if necessary," added the official. To reach that rate we need vaccines.
We have all the capacity to advance with the vaccination and we do not have the doses. "
