Once you have temporary residence you get a DNI, then you can get a CUIL or CUIT.

One comment when you buy a car you receive a CUIT I was not aware for years but looked recently at the status of my License Plate payments on-line and realized I HAVE a CUIT number.

If you are on a tourist visa you only get a C.D.I.

No,,, to buy the car you need first to obtain the CDI, but after looking at my car plate on line for payments I notice I have a CUIT mumber ??? 20-xxxxxxxxx-6 a misrety....?

It might be just an error of the website. It should probably say CUIT/CDI instead of just CUIT. My CDI looks like that number as well: 20-xxxxxxxx-x.

Have you tried entering your number on that page here:

It says "La clave ingresada no es una CUIT" when I enter mine. If you have a real CUIT then it gives you your name etc.

You must already have a cuil to use the site and generate the "constancia de cuil". The constancia de cuil is just a paper showing you have a cuil with name, cuil, DNI number and date when cuil was originally issued on it.
