Hi Everyone -

I am going to be in Buenos Aires for a few months starting in April. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on where to get inexpensive (or free )) Tango lessons or Spanish classes? I saw some posts by spanish tudors I am sure they are worth it but they are generally out of my price range.

I am trying to come up with something to do which is fun, inexpensive or even makes me money! while my husband is working during the day.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

My impression is that a good tutor in Spanish may be hired for about ten American dollars the hour. Is that the range you've seen, Kat?

Some of the Cultural Centers offer free Tango Lessons-- like the one on Defensa 535 in San Telmo. The International House offers free Spanish lessons on Fridays and another in Palermo offers free Spanish conversation on Wednesdays. Google should help you find these, there's also a weekly free newspaper of free cultural events-- you can pick it up at a tourist info booth or at any cultural center. It's called "Cultura BA" and it's published by the government.

best,
Annie

Portenos love classes and clubs- there are very cheap classes, lessons and groups all over town.
Cheap horseback lessons over by the hippodrome, cheap woodcarving and sculpture classes at the museo Sivori, tons of groups playing every sport imaginable, riding bikes, running, playing chess...

Whatever you are interested in, chances are there is a group, or very low cost classes.

To say there is nothing free here- you arent looking.

I often just ride the subte to a new neighborhood- thats a bit over a peso- then walk around. Eat, go to museums, window shop, people watch.

Try reading the following blogs- lots of great ideas for free places to visit, particularly if you like architecture or design-

The cheapest eats-

The pulgas (flea market) is free, on Dorego y Cabrera.
Sunday mornings in San Telmo are free, lots of free entertainment, music, and fun.

For group tango lessons try La Catedral on Tuesday nights starting at 8 or so, cost of admission is $15 pesos, the drinks are cheap as well....it is on Sarmiento I think the 4000 block or 4100 block, a couple of blocks from the Once train station.

Do you know where I can find out more about all these classes Portenos go to? I want to enroll/join. Thanks!

hey, other free things to do include many of the walking tours in the city and the ecological reserve down by puerto madero. also, there are really cheap mp3 tours of the city- you can load it onto your ipod then tour the city at your own pace. it's a lot of fun!

Cheers!

I think you can also take tango lessons at La Viruta, you can buy a 6 lessons free pass at $30 pesos and they at the heart of Palermo Soho http://www.lavirutatango.com/
About free Spanish lessons have a look at guess you can easily make friends here they will be happy to teach you some spanish...good luck!
