I am wondering what can visitors bring into the country from abroad as gifts. I would like to bring a new cell phone and an iPod for relatives. Do security seach luggage at the airport when going through customs and if they do what do I have to pay?

Apple products are worth their weight in gold - good choice. They are unlikely to search - but if they do and your iGoods are still in boxes you're going to pay a heavy toll.

Take the electronics out the boxes - your relatives will understand why you have done it.

just make sure you don't have the packaging for any items you are bringing. it is highly unlikely that they will 1) search you 2) if they do search you, that they will start to accuse you of bringing new items into the country if you don't have the packaging on them still. technically it's 50% duty on anything over $300USD but like I said, as a foreigner and with everything unpacked you should be doubly fine.
