How Safe Is Ba?

All I can say is that I moved here from Los Angeles and I walk around everywhere feeling safer than I did most of the time in LA. I moved here alone as a single woman and had to learn quickly not to dress or act like a tourist. I did get pick pocketed my first week here and that was an expensive lesson learned I have also lived in Mexico for a year and have a few crazy stories from there but here I just watch my purse, cell and laptop a little more. If you are aware of your surroundings as you should be regardless of your location you are fine. If you look like a victim, fearful as you walk around or put yourself in places at times anyone should know better then yes, you are tempting fate. I heard all the stories before I came that I was crazy and I would get killed, I was insane to travel alone blah blah blah.... so far I enjoy this city. I use a taxi instead of the bus or subway and I try to avoid doing stupid things.

I wasnt including Santiago on my list of big cities of Latin America. It has what? 6 million? I was referring to bigger cities, like Mexico, Sao Paulo, etc. For instance, Montevideo is a lot safer than BsAs, but it has only 2 million.

The population of Gran Santiago is about 6.3 million; the central comuna of Santiago has only about 200,000, but is surrounded by dozens of equally densely populated areas. GBA has about 10 million, if I recall correctly, while Capital Federal has about three million; how many of those live in the Microcentro? We can argue details about what constitutes a big city, but Santiago qualifies by just about any standard.

You can take the bus and subway as well if you just use the same rules you stated above. I bus everywhere. Much cheaper than a taxi. :)

So, were you walking around Beverly Hills or South Central?

I lived in West Hollywood. I also grew up in San Francisco but regardless of where you are my point is just to be aware, things happen everywhere. I would imagine walking around South Central at night might fall under stupid and tempting fate.... lol

Nobody walks in LA.

In 2013, Philadelphia (population 1.5 million) had 247 homicides: http://tinyurl.com/osfbt6p

In 2012, Buenos Aires (population 3 million) had 158 homicides: http://tinyurl.com/k63m2j2

Firearms are far more abundant in Philadelphia than Buenos Aires.

Philadelphia and Buenos Aires are (obviously) two cities that are quite distant from each other and do not come close to sharing the same culture.

Houston and Chicago share the same basic culture and are relatively close to each other.

Firearms are far more abundant in Houston than Chicago.

In 2012, Houston (population 2.15 million) had 207 homicides.

In 2012, Chicago (population 2.7 million) had 506 homicides.

Houston allows the "concealed carry" of firearms.

Chicago does not allow the "concealed carry" of firearms.

There are no gun stores in Chicago.

There are 84 "dedicated" gun shops in Huston and 1500 places to legally buy guns (Walmart, etc).

This is so true. The public transportation here is pretty great and you certainly don't need to fear using it. I personally fear for my safety much more in a taxi since they drive like maniacs! I've been in too many near accidents crossing those intersections with no stop signs. It's always the other guy's fault. ;)

very true, I had the door taken off a taxi as I was stepping out, they all drive like maniacs here!
