How Safe Is Ba?

You don't have to fear for your personal safety on public transport but you sure have to fear for your possessions. Out of everyone I know, I and one other are the only ones who have never been robbed in BA. I've been here 8 years, the other 10 years. Maybe we're overly lucky - or maybe public transportation is a trap for pickpockets.

Personally, I can't stand taxis here (has to do with the large percentage of a**holes who drive taxis) but would rather take a taxi than a bus or the subway. I basically walk if it's under 20 blocks, or if I'm in a hurry I might take a taxi (and I love to have my care to go farther), but keep me away from public transportation! Just a personal preference...

BTW - the buses drive as bad as the taxis - they're just bigger and when you're in one you can't see everyone they're cutting off...but if you drive here, you probably have a better understanding of how poorly they drive and have no regard for anyone else on the road. Not to mention the jerks who like to scare people when they're crossing the street in front of them but lurching forward suddenly, or if you're in the middle of crossing and the light changes and they start honking like they're in a hurry to get to the crapper...

But again, just my personal opinion.

I take a lot of collectivos. And I have have never had a problem- but I dont carry my computer with me, and I dont have a smart phone.
I actually prefer collectivos to taxis, unless its the middle of a rainy night- I like to see the city. I have taken epic rides to places like Remedios de Escalada.

Exactly, the buses are bigger; therefore, it's safer to be on one than near one. Or at least it feels that way haha. I love not needing a car here and my favorite thing to do is stare out the colectivo window. I miss my rides from San Telmo to Palermo on the 29. And I've never been robbed or even pick pocketed either. I look around and see a lot of easy targets everywhere, though. Wallets sticking out of back pockets, cell phones stuck in clear or mesh front purse/backpack pockets, purses unzipped and hanging in the crooks of elbows, the list goes on. I can't believe so many locals still wander around here like that despite all the crime hysteria. I think I'm just good at making myself the least attractive target (knock on wood--I know my luck could run out) because I would never, ever do a lot of the stuff I see people doing around me on public transportation. Staring out the window here will always be more entertaining than staring at whatsapp.

My car was stolen, my apt building broken into(not my actual apt), my mothers in laws side apartment was vandalized and robbed and i was robbed on the street at gunpoint all in the same year! I think it's getting more dangerous kids...

Ajo,

Perhaps the number of gun shops in Houston can be attributed to the large market just south of the border. I mean , Canadians are not headed to Phili to buy guns. Not that they could return to Canada with them........

I think you missed the point.
