How Safe Is Ba?

In 2013, Philadelphia (population 1.5 million) had 247 homicides: http://tinyurl.com/osfbt6p

In 2012, Buenos Aires (population 3 million) had 158 homicides: http://tinyurl.com/k63m2j2

Firearms are far more abundant in Philadelphia than Buenos Aires.

I think these figures are not enough to get to your conclusion that Philly is more dangerous than BA. I don't know Philly personally, but I believe in the US you are less likely to be the victim of a crime if you avoid certain neighbors and lifestyle, or if you don't belong to a certain group of people (hobos, met heads, gangsta, drug dealers), while here in BA I got the impression that crime is somewhat widespread in an equal manner.

Crimes in the US toward "us normal people" usually arise from psycho-drama or drug-drama, while here this is a life style, staged-action, often with insiders that helps eh criminals.

Aggregate statistics can be misleading but there's no doubt that, in the US, your chances of falling victim to a firearms homicide are far greater than anywhere in Argentina. Only countries like Honduras make the US look relatively good.

Peoples opinions on safety are very different, depending on where they live.
The OP does not tell us where she is from- Lagos? Zurich? Tokyo? Buenaventura?
I have been in many places much much more dangerous than BsAs, and other places that are much safer.

Without a frame of reference of what you consider "safe", its hard to say.

I doubt if anyone in any large city knows very much about crime in their cities. The local media doesn't report very much about local crime, particularly in cities that enjoy large number of tourists. I lived in San Francisco and Barcelona, before I moved to BA. Both cities rarely if ever reported about crime. In certain areas, one must be extra cautious. However, crime doesn't have borders or a time frame.
I've lived in BA for many years and have never carried a wallet. I carry the amount of money that I think that I'll need. I saw on U.S. tv, recently, that one should carry money and and or a wallet in their tightest pants pocket. I wonder why pants and jacket pockets aren't made with zippers? Perhaps they are frowned upon by pick pocket lobbyists?

Who cares about statistics the fact is that less crimes happened before and now has increased sharply I'm scared  I live in a building with 150 apts. we have police events every week .

Try this website,

you can compare the place where you live now against Buenos Aires.

Thanks a lot to all u guys. It was not my intention to create a subject for an argument.
I've read already and keep on reading a lot about Argentina, but I don't trust official statistics in general, that's why wanted to hear live stories from real people :)
I lived for very long time in Dubai, which is one of the safest places, and clearly understand that BA won't be like that (which actually makes it more real and interesting place).
My friend, who is origin from Argentina, was scaring me that I will be killed on the street within the first month living there :)

Actually, I agree with Matías that Buenos Aires is a relatively safe city but, anecdotally, I consider Santiago safer. "Social inclusion" programs have zero to do with Buenos Aires's safety. Nor do the police, who are either inept or a bunch of thugs.

For all its problems, Argentina remains a relatively law-abiding society with regard to personal safety, but one should always remain aware of his or her surroundings. Most crimes are property crimes or crimes of opportunity.

I wasnt including Santiago on my list of big cities of Latin America. It has what? 6 million? I was referring to bigger cities, like Mexico, Sao Paulo, etc. For instance, Montevideo is a lot safer than BsAs, but it has only 2 million.
