I usually don't carry ID with me most of the time, either. But I know that the police has the right to ask for it - whether at a traffic stop or in the event of an incident. The fact that they take you home to look for it actually leaves me more at ease than if they hold you until until someone can bring it... which is what I thought could happen.
People who believe that the news reports everything are very naive. The news never reports everything - they pick a story here and there and take it to sensational levels, but you don't hear about most of the the things that go on.
