I Reek Of Excitement!

Here is a question for everyone...is there a certain area where a lot of expats tend to be around in Buenos Aires? I'm assuming the Palermo neighborhood but any specific part in the neighborhood? Basically, if you were hunting for an apartment, what particular location in Palermo would you pick? (I heard Palermo is vast and is broken down into sub-communities)

I strongly recommend Barrio Norte, plenty of expats too. Especially the square between this four avenues: Santa Fe, Coronel Diaz, Las Heras, Pueyrredon. I live there and while I m not an expat, you can hear english spoken every corner.
Palermo is huge and has a lot less of public transportation, and streets can be very dark and scary at night (especially if you live near the railways).

These neigborhoods are not exclusively where expats go, you also have San Telmo if you like a bohemian touch, Balvanera, pretty nice but noisy, Villa Crespo (where the biggest part of the jewish community lives), Belgrano, Nuñez, Chacarita, even Colegiales is very nice and quiet. You have lots of neighborhoods to live in, and you can find expats in almost every one of them.

Good luck!!

I would NOT go on craigstlist. i did and am paying more for a crappo piso compartido than i should be- but i had to get out of where i was fast.

if you are looking for a shared piso- use this site- it is way better and the places are way cheaper than craistlist... http://www.compartodepto.com

if you are looking for a medium term furnished place, like a 6 monther (you can get these quite easily in the 3200 to 4100 peso a month range), go to argenprop.com or http://www.enbuenosaires.com/ , or better, just walk around the area you like and walk into inmobilarias... I think Villa Crespo a great place to try to get to- or Almagro- close to Palermo, on the subway line (if you stick close to corrientes) and way cheaper than palermo with more character...caballito also nice....

My serious advice take Alto Palermo Shopping Mall, as your reference, then select something within a few blocks radius. Rentals Only in Pesos!! If you have a paying job and can afford it. Accept no substitutes :D see map below. You will be near TGIF :D

Bear in mind that now the night time taxi fare from Belgrano to San Telmo is more than $100 pesos ... ! believe you will not have a vehicle...!!

Haa the smell of fresh blood to the expat community , it is funny I m new as expat here even I had spend several months here a few years ago .
But it seems is the same everywhere I m a bit more jaded than most ,but remember my young and foolish days when every new expat assignment was an adventure , and don't get me wrong still is otherwise I would had stop many years ago , is just the expectations are more realistic.
1 you will pay the expat tax for everything

2 no matter how friendly you try to be no matter how much you immerse yourself in the culture , you are always the foreigner

3 taxi drivers will give you the scenic route

4 ther is always a resent ment on , "why are you here"

Keep this things in mind , don't fight them ,don't try to rationalize them and enjoy the ride it still could be wonderful

Villa Crespo is next to Palermo -- it has become a popular place for people to live at a good cost too. you are only steps away from Palermo where everything costs much more. The other person said to start with the Mall -- it is a good reference point but you need to come to terms with the amount of money you have for spending. Inflation here is running more than 25%. Villa Crespo offers many buses going to all parts of the city. A bus ride here costs about 35 cents on a USD basis. Taxi starts at around 9 pesos then every 200 meters is bumped up. I rarely use them.
this is simply my thought == keep asking around but come to terms with your budget. all the best.

The area Barrio Norte where Palermo meets Recoleta is where I have stayed recently and chosen to stay again. I thought it the best area I had seen because you are close to most things with good subway and bus connections. In addition, I would recommend the agent I used Buenos Aires Stay.

If you want to be in the heart of where you will probably socialise, you really cant go past Palermo. Especially cause you will be close to the subway n plenty of buses. If you want to save money, you could go further but then you spend more in taxis, lose time etc just cant see it being worth it for a few months. Enjoy.

Should add, just remember around there the subway runs down Avenida Santa Fe. Worth scoping out when your apartment hunting. If I was you, I would try and find a room with locals/Argentines as well if possible if its just for a few months, get in to the culture, improve your spanish.

Figure out where you will be working as an "Intern". Then draw your radius.
I am not sure that Argentina is of much value when attempting to study/learn marketing. But I guess it might look OK on the resume.
