importing a car

Hi,

Has anyone done it? I searched but couldn't see any info. The reason I ask is I was reading on AFIP's website that it is allowed up to us$15000

I guess I will have to go and ask about the form and the process but if anyone here has tried or can provide some insight, that would be great!

Historically, you coul not sell your imported car before two years.
Now, with all the current import restrictions, is it wise to import a car? Think of parts....

Katti do you have any links? Like I mentioned I did search but couldn't find anything relevant.
I know car parts are tricky to source & expensive so will buy something also available here like a mini cooper or kia soul. The price difference is crazy - I'm not paying $10,000us$ for a second-hand scratched up piece of $#@& here. The interest-free plans are tempting but there are basically no cars available due to restrictions. Maybe in 2014 you will actually get the car!

Are you a returning citizen of Argentina? If not, I would highly recommend staying away from importing any car. Or at the very least, be prepared for it to cost 2x as much as you think it will to bring one in and be prepared to pay some hefty taxes.

Unfortunately, by the time you're done with it, it's going to cost just as much as buying here and likely much more frustrating. Your car may get stuck in the port for months, anyway. I think everyone has thought about it, and if it were feasible, more would take advantage.

On our last renewal they told us importing was possible under certain conditions (one is the fact that it has been here in argentina for over 2 years), and it will be taxed on the 2nd hand value in country of origin. That is what they told us.
We had no time to look into it yet.
If it is true, and we can use Belgian 2nd hand value it would be a great deal for us, as officially it is worth less then an ATV, here 2nd hand price is about double as new price in Belgium...
if it is not possible, we keep on renewing the permission every 8 months.

The normal rule is that they tax you 50% on the value of the car here. That his usually high, as used cars don't lose a lot of their value. That was before the crazy import restrictions we are having now.

you must first get a permanent residence visa if foreigner, then import a used car of up to U$15.000 in value. cannot sell vehicle for two years after that.

You're gonna pay around 80% in import duties and taxes. Good luck. I wouldn't do it.

I suggest that you find a good despacanhte , and get all the CURRENT info , as a lot has changed. Many statements above were true , some still are , but some have changed. Best to check it out very carefully before you decide.
