i'm seeing quite a bit of articles in the news about various land grabs in different parts of the country.

why does this seem to be such a common thing here? do property owners not have any rights to remove people who illegally enter on their property?

There's some noise coming from lago Mascardi on the news the other day, homeowners are getting their homes burnt while they shop in Bariloche and according to one resident there's constant hostilities at night in the form of shootings and rock throwing against properties not allowing them to sleep coming from a group of ''natives'' wanting to claim the land ....... it takes the fire department one hour to get to those fires, so pretty much they are on their own, so far they are begging the federal gov' for assistance due to the proximity to the international border but they are considering other options since they have reached out in many occasions to the feds to no response....

Suburban land grabs are big mafia business. Families are paid to invade vacant land and set up camp - then construction starts, and the new dwellings are rented by the room, at exorbitant rates. Sometimes, occupied land lots are "sold" to the squatters, who pay dearly for fake titles. Local bosses make out like bandits, and poor families are still without homes.

The reality is that land grabs do happen. Laws vary from providence to providence, for example, in Missiones, it is a very serious problem. Yes, it's the indigenous people mostly doing it. If you go on vacation, you have the real threat, of someone being in your home when you come back and the police won't help you. You'll have to handle it with a judge and he may rule against you.

I see this “Social Leader“ Grabois character as just another Peronist opportunist. A freeloader parasite latching onto the coattails of the latest disenfranchised group to see how much he can get for himself. His fancy last name and his do gooder demeanor doesn’t fool me for a second. As far as the Mapuches there may be people that have legitimate land claims. However recent finds of rich oil and gas deposits in the Patagonia / Rio Negro region (see Vaca Muerta) has Mapuches wannabes coming out of the woodwork to stake their claim on the land.

It was pretty common during a time period near where we lived (20 minutes from downtown CABA). It was a group of families, they would move onto any vacant lot and make sure they put up temp housing with a roof (the roof gave them rights). Then they would wait for the owner to pay them to leave (which was the quickest/easiest way to deal with the problem) and then go and do it a few blocks away. In a year period, I think there was 4 occasions near us.

Do people not send in their own thugs some times to dislodge the squaters? I can't see some resigning to the fact the police won't act and there is nothing they can do.
